Golzee
What are your thoughts on Big House? For around $20 it is intriguing, especially since it is newish and has an age statement unlike a lot of new bourbons.
amg
I haven't tried it, but I like that they're very upfront about the fact that it's sourced from MGPI, and in theory at 6 years / 90 proof that should be a decent pour.
squire
What a crock, standard MGP middle grade whisky being touted as handmade, small batch and their web page displays rows of pot stills in a stock photo lifted from a Scottish distillery.$20.00 a bottle? $10.00, mebbe, and only because it's 6yr/90 proof. Still wouldn't buy it.

Puzzling, to be sure.
Golzee
AMG, thank you for the pdf link, although puzzling, it did have some useful information.
PaulO
I just can't understand the brand's concept. I have heard that some convicts try to make alcohol from sugar or whatever else they can find in the joint. It doesn't sound too appetizing. Is this stuff marketed to people on probation? squire
Yes, I suppose it's useful to see in writing MGP doesn't use moldy corn but I kinda already suspected that.
GrPeMi
AMG, thank you for the pdf link, although puzzling, it did have some useful information.Yeah...I read it as a detailed description of all of the things that MGP probably does anyway, with Big House claiming it as their own. (and it is, in a sense, as all of it relates to the bourbon they sell.) It just happens to apply to all the other MGP bourbons, as well.Never tasted the bourbon, probably never will make it out here...but at least they disclose the source, give detailed information about fermentation and distillation, and have an accurate age statement. That's something...
smokinjoe
I usually zoom right past most/all of the new NDP's on the shelf in general, particularly those with MGP bourbon as the source (which is damn near all of them! ), as I've yet to be wow'd by one yet. I find MGP bourbon simply "serviceable". Which, I guess isn't necessarily a "bad" thing. Love their rye, though. That said, $20 for a 6yr AS 90 proof bourbon is fairly priced IMO, and worth a shot if you get a hankerin' to step out a bit.
dcbt
I don't see any reason to give this a whirl, but some of you guys sound like my dad, stuck in the '80s on prices. My sister and I recently were chatting with my dad, long story short he was blown away by NYC joints charging $12 for a house glass of wine, and then you could see all cognitive function shut down on his face when I said that's about what a pour of MM will cost in even in Dallas at a nice restaurant (and $8 at a typical place). He said he was glad he doesn't go out much. I agree with him on that point.
tanstaafl2
Interesting that it is another NDP that lists the MGP mashbill differently than does MGP. (60/35/5 like Four Roses instead of 60/36/4 like MGP lists it). Not that it would likely make much difference.
BigBoldBully
dcbt, while I wish I could go back to the 80s (with a fake ID!), luckily you don't need a time machine to beat the quoted prices, at least in my region. I doubt I would pay $20 for 750ml of 6yr 90 proof mgp bourbon when in 2015 I can still happily buy that quantity of:6yr 103 proof Heaven Hill bourbon (FC) for $136yr 80 proof OT for $8WT 101 (iirc claimed on the website to be primarily a mix of 6-8 yr) for $14EW BIB for $109yr 100 proof KC for $19OGD BIB for $13OGD 114 for $
dcbt
I'm not saying the price can't be beat, and I have no intention of purchasing this. But I don't think $20 for 6yo / 90 proof is ridiculously insulting. That's essentially what MM is.
CorvallisCracker
JD Black is 4/80 and goes for over $20 most places ($22.95 here). Best selling whiskey in the world. :skep: Not that I have a problem with that (40 shares of BF..

What I do find insulting is their artfully crafted web page which gives the impression they are actually creating a small batch handmade Bourbon when in fact they're not.
