393foureyedfox
yip. i hated it when KCSB went to the cheapass new label, and when HH6BIB changed their label. but, really, it doesnt matter that much, as we are ultimately after what is inside. If the new packaging correlates to price hikes, I can see the outrage. But, it is a better looking bottle now!
PaulO
I may grab one or two of the current label just to have around. I do like the look of the new label.
BigBoldBully
As I just mentioned for another thread, retailers in my area that once carried the bond began carrying the 80 (formerly 86) proof in its place. Most I talked to do not even seem to realize they are now selling 80 proof in the same spot--and for the same price–that for years had been occupied by the BIB. I should have been more alarmed. Then a couple of weeks ago the changeover hit at my one remaining go-to store, a place where the supply had seemed so endless. The bond for $13 something a bottle is suddenly a sea of 80 proof for $13 something a bottle, masquerading under the same hand written shelf sticker. The owner told me he could still get me a case of the bonded, but when I called later to verify the price, I was informed it is up to $25 a bottle (no idea if it will be screw tops or the new corks)! I returned to where they always sold liters at what seemed slightly overpriced around $20. Gone. The days of a true "value OGD BIB" may be over around here. flahute
I'm seeing on Reddit that MSRP is going up to $25 in other states. I think this might be the new normal for OGDBIB. The fancy new label and cork seem to be coming with a price.
Josh
OGD BiB went up by a dollar on February 1 in Michigan from $19 to $20, so I don't know if a massive price increase is in the cards.
bad_scientist
I like the new design a lot but the cork's kind of silly, considering how a lot of people drink the stuff. Personally, I'll hear that "romantic" popping sound only once per bottle before I drain the whiskey into a larger mixing bottle to make a batch of Old Fashioned. suntour
More than likely. I feel most BIB pricing is vestigial at this point. I think EHTSMB showed the industry that $50 is attainable for a bonded product, so why keep things "underpriced" in an overheated market? It still blows my mind you can get JWDANTBIB for less than EWB in Oregon but that's probably going to change soon too. mrfat
Can't even find OGDBIB on any shelves. It's all the 80 proof and at $15 now. One place could get it but wants $21.99 as their cost is supposedly $20. And OGD114 used to be $24 around here and now it's $30. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to move that upmarket as well and sell it at $40. Well at least there's still Fighting Cock and VOB for my value pours. FlounderinDC
I saw my local place that usually has pretty steady, good prices had the bonded for $30 a liter.
flahute
For once, the reality of Washington State being among the last to get new products is a benefit. With multiple reports of big price increases out there, I checked my local big box store and they still have 750's for 15.99 and handles for 27.99 so I stocked up on the handles. Also grabbed a couple 114's at 23.99 each. With the insane taxes we pay here, if we see the same price increases that are being reported out there, the BIB will be more than $30 out the door. Price increases do not usually phase me quite so much, but something about OGD being so inexpensive for so long .... On the other hand at Flahute's $28 a handle I would be stockpiling. We have never gotten handles of it in my area.

When I purchased the OGD handles, it was online for in-store pickup and I failed to remember to distinguish between the 80 proof and the BIB. So, I went to pick them up, they were all 80 proof. I returned them and bought some extra 114's instead. The store has no BIB in any size. Zilch. I'm now scouring other local stores in order to stock up before the new label and price increase. TheNovaMan
This sucks. The cartoon label was bad enough, but the whole package is wrong now. I would have thought the Japanese would understand tradition better than this.
fusion210
I stopped buying OGBiB when I found OGD114, but I do look. Over the last couple of years it has seemingly gone up $1-2 every 6 months for a fifth. I haven't gone to a local store in a while, but I'm sure there are bottles of it waiting to be bought for about $20. Using their nice website for NC ABC stores, it looks like the average store has some 15 bottles. It's hard to tell with their system, they could just be non BiB. But I've always seen at least 8 bottles. None with the cork top. OGD 114 is ~$23 in SC while OGDBiB is ~$20 in NC. You can see why I stopped buying.
ethangsmith
We've now stooped so low as to bunkering bottles due to a label change? Pathetic. Notice there isn't one comment about the bourbon inside- which I'm sure is unchanged and just as tasty as it's always been. You could make the label say whatever you want or look however you want. It's the whiskey that's my only concern.
squire
Three of our locals have the new 80 proof at around $17.00 a bottle and the BIB priced at $22.00. One remaining store has a good supply of old stock BIBs for $14.59 a bottle. Of course I can still buy Dant all day long for $11.39 a bottle so my drinking patterns may shift in the future. It's the whiskey that's my only concern.I'm quite sure the whiskey inside tastes just fine and is the same as before. I'm bunkering a few because of the drastic price increase. Not just a dollar or two increase, but the almost doubling of the price. All for the same whiskey. If I'm staring at a bunch of bottles on the shelf for the old price, and I know I like a lot, and I know the price is going up a lot (and I live in Washington State with the most insane taxes in the country where price increases are felt more deeply), why would I not bunker a few? This does not seem so pathetic to me. BigBoldBully
Bunker just because of a label change? I've bunkered for far less cause than that! Of course, maybe my bunkering pistol has developed a bit of a hair trigger.

Well, for me, Fishnbowljoe brought me back to earth early on in this thread when I was losing sleep; I think he said something about paying attention to what's in the bottle. Might have been an other thread. Anyway, what you say is what I needed to hear (well, needed to read). At my age, however, anything to keep the heart pumping is GOOD. But are we bunkering just because of a label change? No, we are not. We are bunkering because the price is going up by a significant factor. Is it about the whiskey inside the bottle? Of course it is. I have no fear it's still good, I just prefer to purchase that whiskey at a lower price if possible and as long as the orange capped bottles are still on the shelf it's possible, so I'm buying.
