Someone told me that in 5 years we will see alot more bourbons become available. The stuff that is harder to find will become more readily available. Any truth to this?

Chuck's got a nice post about this over on the 'Whisky Advocate' blog saying there's no real shortage, just rolling availability due to an expanding market. Apparently, Fred Minnick is doing a follow-up in a couple weeks defending the "sky is falling" opinion. John Hansell has those guys coming and going just for us. In sum - pick a position, and in 5 to 10 years, we'll know what the future will bring. Also, we talking JUST bourbon? Just big-house bourbon? JUST American whiskies? The hardcopy WA I just got talks about softness in the scotch market. Go figure. I may have to start drinking those.

I guess we should stick to bourbons (but not necessarily from the majors), since I posted this thread in the bourbon discussion. But it would be interesting to have a similar thread going in the foreign whiskies section. My WA subscription has expired, so I will have to take your word. I would welcome some serious softness in the scotch market!

Here in UT we do not get alot of stuff that you people get, shit I did not even know about the other stuff at all. Then joining some sites and finding out how bad UT really is. My regulars that are usually in stock (Old Forester Signature, WTKS, WTRB, BT, Bulleit, Woodford Reserve, EC12).

I haven't bought a bottle of whiskey from the state for some time. The last one was when the new Rare Breed batch showed up. Yesterday I did go to buy some beer and took a gander at the whiskey section. It's sad. The new items that are getting added are mostly crap like Hudson Baby Bourbon, Henry DuYore's, apparently any micro who wants shelf space. Plus now they're carrying Wild Turkey Forgiven and Diamond Anniversary. We're already onto EWSB 2005 - took months last year to get to 2004. BT, ER, etc always are pretty sparse on the shelves.

This is in a place where six years ago I bought a BTAC set with no trouble, where PHC wheater sat around on shelves for over a year, etc... Times have definitely changed and it's evident by looking only at the mid and bottom shelves.

Here in Layton, no Diamond Anniversary, I did buy the Forgiven around early this Jan. in SLC. Have not bought a Evan Williams Single Barrel in a couple of years at least, tasty one though.

State has plenty and will transfer between stores if you're after it. (Or http://www.webapps.abc.utah.gov/Production/OnlineInventoryQuery/IQ/InventoryQuery.aspx will tell you where it is). No current premium Turkey for me, though.

Thanks, but for that price I will hold off.

I keep telling myself that someday they'll come to their senses and make a nice old 101 proofer again.
