Hey SBers. On my way to DC. Any recommendations for good bourbon and or cocktails? Any bottle shops to check out? I'm sure a store up there is pricey. Thanks.

The bar I was going to tell you to go to apparently closed last month! D'oh!

Darn urban redevelopment...apparently that block has been designated for some big new development so the bar lost its lease.

It was called The Passenger. Top notch cocktails, generous pours (I'm pretty sure they gave me a 4 ounce pour the last time I was there...of 12 yr Willett at >120 proof...I was stumbling out)

The bar at Acadiana (9th and New York NW) has a pretty good bourbon selection (prices aren't too bad) but it's a fun place to get a drink. The flight is a fun way to try a few new bourbons. Here's a link to the menu

There's also a place called The Pig that does a rotating $8 flight during happy hour. And their happy hour pulled pork sandwich is really good too.

Thanks! Will try to navigate the snow to one of these.

Definitely a lovely night in DC. Acadiana is pretty Metro convenient to the 9th and G exit of Chinatown/Gallery Place.

Wash DC stores can set their own prices. If you are staying "downtown" (say, any hotel in the box between 10th & 25th NW and E & R NW), ask the concierge where the closest half dozen liquor stores are and go browse. If you are "North" of Rock Creek Park, check out Sherry's (www.sherryswine.com) at 2627 Connecticut Avenue NW. It has competitive prices and extensive offerings of bourbons, Canadians, and scotches. Further up Connecticut is Calvert-Woodley (www.calvertwoodley.com) 4439 Connecticut Avenue NW. In Georgetown, Plain Old Pearsons (www.pearsonswine.com) at 2436 Wisconsin Avenue NW has a fair selection. As I said, however, do NOT pass by hole-in-the-wall liquor stores, especially downtown.

In Adams Morgan (18th St and Columbia Road NW) check out 'Bourbon' which is the name of a bar/restaurant that has an exceptional selection on two floors. Of course, Jack Rose . . .

Finally, be sure to wander through your hotel's bar - more than once I've been surprised.

Ended up at Jack Rose. Great spot and saying they have a wide selection is an understatement. Had a blast and got to sip on a number of bottles I doubt I'll ever own. Jefferson 18 SW juice was a highlight for me. Thanks for the recommendation. Also had an excellent old fashioned at founding farmers. Tried some older Willett and PH there. Great trip and great city.

Do you know if any of the liquor stores you mentioned are particularly expensive? I thought that Schneider's was quite expensive overall, but some of the smaller stores were not. Then there was one store on Dupont Circle that had an insane selection of stuff, but was also insanely priced.

You can indeed enjoy a cigar at Jack Rose! Caveat: only on the rooftop, which has a bar, but not all the great selections as downstairs. If there is a particular bottle you want, they may bring it up if you ask nicely...but the best tasting options are downstairs.
