According to the Bourbon Review, an arrest has been made in the case of the theft of five barrels from Wild Turkey (which I just now heard of now myself. The suspect's name is Gilbert Thomas Curtsinger and he also faces drug and other charges.

In an interesting twist, he worked at the loading dock at Buffalo Trace in 2013.

He must be pretty strong, those things are heavy.

"They are also pursuing a second suspect."

Even with two people I think that would be pretty difficult.

There's actually a JD ad running right now that mentions a full barrel weighs 500+ pounds (I forget the exact number), obviously that goes down over time but that's still a hefty weight (but one that two people probably could pull off).

Interesting story, but again, I am saddened by the lack of editing and proof reading that goes into journalism these days. Even as a nurse, I am unaware of a controlled substance called "steriords".....

You're right. I was thinking of girly men such as myself. A guy in that line of work would probably be much stronger than a stay at home dad with an MA in medieval history.

Rolling barrels from a loading dock into a trailer or truck bed would not be that difficult for one person.

INDEED! That's why barrels have been a mainstay for storing wet, as well as dry goods for hundreds of years, eh?! Even a newly filled barrel weighing in at nearly 550 pounds is easy to roll around. Just don't roll it over your toes!

Rolling is easy but getting it off the rack might be a bit tricky, I'm thinking.

Why do I have a feeling there is going to be a very limited edition bottling coming from these recovered barrels?

Funny you should mention that L. I was thinking exactly the same thing.

"New from Wild Turkey, our extremely limited edition, extra small batch; Lost Rafter. Only 5 barrels made. Better gobble up a bottle while you can!"

FIWW, I had to google what a group of turkeys is called because I wasn't quite sure. I knew gaggle was a group of geese, but I thought it may hold true for turkeys too. Nope. A group of turkeys can also be called a flock or a gang, amongst other things. I though Lost Rafter sounded a little better than Lost Flock.

Yo, Joe. "Gang" of turkeys says my brother who was a Hokie (Va Tech). And, I like Lost Rafter better than Lost Gang. BTW, you think these thieves were professionals?

My uneducated guess would be the guy/guys just saw an (another?) opportunity. That, or maybe they got someone interested in the possibility of them being able to procure a few barrels. I also wouldn't rule out them having received a little money up front to get the "barrels rolling" so to speak.;)

Given that accuracy is not the hallmark of labeling, you may as well go with "Lost Gaggle". It makes as much sense as Single Barrel Small Batch. Turkey's marketing department won't know the difference.

Cannot overlook the fact that these barrels aged the bourbon more quickly due to the travel sloshing, ala Ocean. They need a name that capitalizes on that.

since theres already a 'forgiven', maybe a 'convicted', or at least 'alleged' labelling....

seriously though, would they even be able to legally sell it now? theres no way to prove he did/didnt do anything to alter it

In other news, Kentucky Owl announced the delay of the release of their second batch of ultra limited edition bourbon, citing "supply chain interruptions."
