This may not be the place for this, but thought some GA members might be interested. World Beverage in Duluth GA is really ramping up it's Store Select Barrel program. About 3 weeks ago they received a Single Barrel Store Select 1792 that is very tasty with a great price of $23.99 750ml. Yesterday they received a Single Barrel of Knob Creek. In about 4 weeks they will be getting a Single Barrel Buffalo Trace and a Whistle Pig cask strength. A few weeks after that they should be receiving a Old Weller Antique. Then a barrel of Eagle Rare with a Jefferson Reserve a few weeks after that. Don't want to sound like a shill, but I think it's great that a small local store is working hard to cater to Bourbon enthusiasts in the Atlanta area.

Thanks for sharing - I always like to see more local stores doing barrels. One here in East Cobb did a 1792 barrel last year, although I was disappointed to find it was completely indistinguishable (at least to me) from a retail bottle I had. I did a couple blind sbs and couldn't pick one over the other - but they charged a premium for their selection.

I didn't have a retail 1792 to do a sbs with the store select, but thought the Store Select at World Beverage had a good nose, great mouth feel, and a finish medium long with just enough oak. And at $23.99, was $4 cheaper than any local retail prices.

Wow, that's a bunch of store selects. From what I hear, the barrel programs are a big commitment.

Just last week, I picked up store select OWA (bottled in 2012) and ETL. Haven't had a chance to do a SBS but frankly, my untrained palate probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I may go back and pick up the rest of the stock regardless since the prices were much lower than comps in my area.

The 1792 is one I've been meaning to pick up. Hopefully soon.

The store picks can be a bit of a gamble, as it is all about who is picking. Do they prefer really smooth over spicy? If so - likely I'll find their pick worse than retail, but others might like that better. If they're not charging a premium, I'm not disappointed (well . . . ok, maybe just a little ) if it tastes the same as the retail. It isn't like they roll out stock that is a huge departure from the profile for their selection. But you always hope you're getting something above average.

wonder what the price is going to be on that Whistle Pig cask strength, with the prices they're charging for the "Boss Hog" I'm a bit surprised they'd do a private selection of it.

Looks like it will be $99.99 retail. Much better price than the Boss Hog and about $15 higher than their regular price for Whistle Pig 100 proof.

Barrel Programs are a big commitment. The Whistle Pig barrel is costing them $15K. And you are never sure exactly how many bottles you'll get out of the barrel. Which of course affects bottle price.

  • 2 weeks later...

Wanted to pass on that the Store Select Cask Strength Whistle Pig barrel is being bottled on Monday and will soon thereafter ship to Georgia then the store. And it has been confirmed that Dave Pickerel, Master Distiller for Whistle Pig (formerly of Maker's Mark) will be at the store on April 17th to talk about Bourbon and Rye and sign bottles. This is an opportunity to meet a great master distiller and the chance to get a bottle of one of the best Rye Whiskey I've ever tasted.

Found out that a Store Select Barrel of Old Weller Antique will be delivered on Wednesday and a Store Select Barrel of Jefferson's Ocean 4 will be delivered to the store on Thursday. Store Select Whistle Pig will be delivered around the 9th, and confirmation that Dave Pickerel WILL be here on the 17th for a bottle signing and discussion about it.

Thanks for the information. It was great meeting and talking to you this past weekend. Unfortunately the Cards fell short.

Yeah.....if only he could have made both free throws at end of regulation....oh well. Now no reason to yell at the TV this weekend. But I'm going to be in Luavull, so if I watch the final four while out sipping bourbon I'll have to put up with the Big Blue Nation.

Everything has been confirmed. Dave Pickerell, Whistle Pig Master Distiller, will be at World Beverage in Duluth Friday, April 17th starting at 5PM to talk to customers and sign bottles of the store select Cask Strength Whistle Pig. Should be fun time.

Whistle Pig will be delivered tomorrow. Bottle cost is going to be a little less than expected. $79.99 a bottle with $5 off if you come to the signing on Friday April 17th with Dave Pickerel. And it appears as if the store is also going to be getting some of the Madeira AND Sauterne cask finshed ryes. According to the distributor, these are only going to be available at locations that purchased barrels. Looks like the cost of those are going to be around $120.

Dave's a good guy and I'm sure he'll be talking about the future of Whistle Pig and also Hill Rock.

Just a bump to remind people in Atlanta about this event. Should be a fun evening.

I was hoping to be there for this. I have been experiencing some pain in my left leg and the Doctor diagnosed a clot (DVT) was causing the pain so I have been restricted to the house. No driving or flying for a while. Was looking forward to picking up some Whistle Pig since I have never had the opportunity to try it. O well there will be a next time.

I was hoping to make it out, but the weather and just a damn long week curbed that plan (the thought of 2+ hours in the car round trip was challenging!) Did grab a 1792 from a different store so I wouldn't feel totally left out, but hoping they still have some of the WP left in a couple of weeks. Hope everyone has (or is having) a great time!)

Knew the crappy weather was going to keep some folks from making it. SO....I had Dave sign all the extra bottles of Madeira we have, and a bunch of the store select Cask Strength Whistle Pig. Just ask for Bill when you get there Gary and I will be glad to hook you up.
