Protecting Wax On Bottles

Quick question. For bottles that you are going to keep for a while what do you do to protect from the wax cracking. I have seen pictures that appears that people are wrapping the wax with Saran Wrap?

I have never had a problem with wax cracking to anywhere near an extent that I thought it would cause a problem with the whiskey. And, I'm talking some of these bottles are decades old. Heck, I've had more problems getting through the wax with a knife, pliers, X-Acto, vise grips, chisel, saw, and Kung Fu Grip to get the damn cork out! :D

One of the main reasons I was able to stretch out the consumption of the five bottles of A. H. Hirsch I bought in 1995 was that it was such a bloody chore to get through the wax.

It's more a cosmetic thing and I don't really bother with it at all. If you need to, I imagine electrical tape may work.

The best may be one I saw on youtube where Liquodhound said he wax dip over the wax dip. :)

I wonder if weather makes a difference? Do you live in warmer weather where climate doesn't fluctuate dramatically?

I use Parafilm wrap on bottles I intend to keep for a while just to try to curb evaporation. My guess is that is what others were doing, rather than protecting the wax.

I'm not sure of the relevance of this question, unless you're suggesting storing in a non-temperature controlled environment?

:slappin:I fought the wax on a bottle of Armagnac for about 15 minutes (and made a heck of a mess), before I gave up and Googled it... Running it under some hot water softened the hard, brittle wax enough that i was able to cut through it pretty easily.
