Imagine my surprise when stopping by a restaurant for a late dinner and seeing this:

XDO6CfT.png

Oh my!

I ask the waitress for WLW & Vintage 17 to start.

Awhile later she returns to double-check what I ordered.

Ten minutes later she returns and informs me they have neither, but the bartender has offered some recommendations that are similar to what I ordered: Knob Creek Single Barrel & Angel's Envy Rye.

I order Vintage 21

no.

Eagle Rare 17 (top of the menu)

nope.

Sazerac 18

no...

WT12

Yes!

Whew!

Oh.

She brought me a glass of WT81...

Oh boy. We Have places like that around here, why they even bother with the full menu I'll never know. Tried to get ETL at a place recently, out, ended up with Rock Hill Farms. They did have Pappy 20 for $100 a pour. I passed.

Actually those are good prices but only if they have them in stock.

The prices are the most likely reason they aren't in stock.

my thoughts exactly... those are phenomenal prices. I've seen other chicago bars that have had them in stock, be 3x the prices here, which is not exactly worth it to me and why it's in stock.

Cause they actually have a bottle of the 81.

Right. If I didn't have WLW, I'd sell it for $1.

I live in Chicago but I"m from Madison, WI, which is where this was. Also why I thought this might actually be a reality. It's also right next door to a liquor store I got a bottle of ECBP #7 a few hours earlier, so I was flying high...

Sigh. I should have known better.

"A least they had prices. I ordered a Bushmill's neat last night and got hosed for $12.50 + tip."

RyeNot, if they charged me $12.50 for that, there would assuredly be no tip.

Yeah, it would be nice if they would update their menu.

And fix some of their spelling errors while they are at it. Knobb Creek Rye? Bulliet Rye?

have you tried out Greenbush Bar in Madison? we were there visiting a friend, and he brought me here where they did have all of the BTAC and PVW available and we did a PVW flight there with 1 oz pours for ~$15. it was the 12, 15 and 20 year, not a bad flight at all!

It definitely feels like a Seinfeld episode:

Why do you have something on your menu if you don't have it?

That's how much we would charge if we did.

But you don't?

Right.

Have you ever had these?

No.

Do you think you ever will?

No.

Do you have ANYTHING that is on your menu?

No.

What about water, do you at least have water, can I get a glass of water?

Oh, yes, we have plenty of water, I will very gladly bring you water.

I agree in general, but it was part of dinner and I wasn't going to screw the server out of her pay because of the owner's pricing policy. My revenge is that I won't return. It was diPescara's in Northbrook , IL.

FWIW, I could have bought the whole bottle at Binny's for $19.99.

If she was otherwise good that counts for something. I am just thinking of my old restaurant jobs when I made sure to tactfully notify customers of the prices of things to give them a chance to change the order in circumstances like this where those prices were high enough to potentially cause surprise or anger. Figured otherwise I was complicit in fleecing them, and perhaps causing them never to return--and deserved what I got (or didn't get) in terms of tips.

In London in early feb I went to a whisky bar that had OC Proprietor's Reserve on the menu. I was freaking out with glee. They didn't have it. WLW, my second choice, they also didn't have.

The happy ending was a decent pour of Saz18 which turned me around on Sazerac - maybe for better or worse given the lengths one must go to find it...
