Tony Santana
I live in Chicago but I"m from Madison, WI, which is where this was. Also why I thought this might actually be a reality. It's also right next door to a liquor store I got a bottle of ECBP #7 a few hours earlier, so I was flying high...Sigh. I should have known better. Tony Santana
And, if it's where I think it is, the same people own both the bar and the liquor store next door.
TunnelTiger
Could have been worse. They could have poured you anything and charged for what you ordered even if they didn't have it.
Chris m
It was Brickhouse, Tony. It was just finished being built around the time I moved down to Chicago, I remember going in there with some people for a shot of WT on one of their first nights open. Haven't paid it much attention since then but ended up going in after a show at the Overture as it had the least amount of drunk college students. Oddly enough I was in Colorado for work yesterday, ordered Vintage 17, and was given a glass of god-awful whiskey I had never heard of. The bartender ended up tasting it and apologizing for pouring the wrong thing. Ended up with WLW, which I'll never complain about. If I ever see Vintage again I'm going to be afraid to order it. BFerguson
The happy ending was a decent pour of Saz18 which turned me around on Sazerac - maybe for better or worse given the lengths one must go to find it...No comparing the youthful student to the aged master.Once tasted, it does make nearly all else pale in comparison. It does deserve the hype it gets.B

Harry in WashDC
Agree with BFerg & TBT - the two "after dinner" sips I've had that were memorable were a current GTS and a Saz 18. Not on the same night, of course. I was not surprised the GTS was available as it had been released earlier that month, but the Saz 18 was ordered with the expectation they'd say it was NOT available. Imagine my surprise when it appeared.
GrPeMi
Must be something about places in WI. Aside from celebrating the folks' 40th anniversary, it seemed like it was going to be a good night all around, the restaurant had WLW on the menu for $16. That seemed like a worthwhile pour...nope. Bartender recommends Blanton's instead. Not really what I'm looking for. OK, saw Knob Creek Rye on the bar menu earlier, how about a KCR manhattan...nope, no KCR, just KC. Only other rye was Templeton, so I'll take the KC manhattan, even though I prefer ryes for that. Brother orders a sidecar, gets a sazerac. This got straightened out, of course, but it was surprising from a resort that claims top-notch service. The rest of the meal was excellent, but I'm left wondering if they're just not used to dealing with anything other than your run-of-the-mill brandy old-fashioned...it is WI after all. Or perhaps they know their customer base quite well, and the fairly deep (if not very broad) scotch selection is really their strength.
