What Bourbon did you purchase today? / Spring 2015

Browsing my area Total Wine last night and spotted these for the very first time. My interest was peaked, so I picked up a couple. Now, I need to do some research on what I bought. Man, sometimes I am very compulsive! Anyone know about these releases? $108 for the pair, out the door, tax included.

People either love it or they hate it. I get way too much of a vitamin/mineral taste.

I got one a couple months back and have been trying to love it. So far while I cannot say that I actively dislike it, I am also not loving it either. There is quite a bit of the mineral/vitamin taste in there, which does seem unique to Dickel.

But, there is still 3/4 of the bottle left and I am committed to finishing it. If I start liking it more and more as the bottle approaches empty, that would not be the first time that has happened.

I've been looking around for it and haven't had any luck yet.

The idea is that it let's the pour breath better, which makes it very likeable. Also, there are a few who really like it. Oh Well ?"#@% Only time will tell!

The private barrel 1792 bottles that I have are 9 years old, so that is often a benefit of the 1792 private barrels. Better than the NAS 1792 currently out there. Enjoy.

As an aside...

Was at Total Wine & overheard one of the sales guys pushing Chestnut Farms (???...the one with the horses screen-printed on the bottle)and Southshot (one of their "direct from distillery" brands) on a couple looking to buy a gift for one of their dads. Heard them saying they were going to put it in an old Beam decanter they found at an antique store. Didn't seem to know much about bourbon themselves, but I decided to just mind my own business after the sales guy left. Given the context, I wondered why the TW guy didn't recommend KC, OGD, Beam Bonded, Booker's, Baker's...really anything other than the 2 he did, other than, I would guess, the margins are higher on those...

Anyway, just an amusing anecdote...

Always always always pushing the chestnut farms on me every time o go into that store. And everyone else looking for a recommendation. Last time I was there, I asked for ETL, we actually got to talking a bit having a nice bourbon conversation. The moment was ruined when he started pointing to the dad gum chestnut farms again. It's apparently a Barton distilled private label for Total Wine. Probably not bad bourbon, but NAS 90 proof in a pretty bottle at 49.99 is not too appealing to me.

finally he returned, one bottle in hand and said "Apparently it's all allocated for bars and restaurants, but I managed to get one bottle for you".

This is a $35 bottle we are talking about, and I'm not sure what self-respecting bartender is going to be serving pre-mixed Manhattans out of a bottle. Sheesh!

It seems Spec's is forming a very bad new habit with allocated releases. I've stopped ordering pours in bars for this very reason. I'm sure I'll collapse the economy.

Yep, NAS. I figured it's worth a punt at $28. I doubt I'll be able to establish a relationship with the owners of the store its at, but it is small enough that I might be able to influence their barrel picks eventually.

Yes, and I know from some independent merchants that there is a big push from distributors in Texas to make most (if not all) LE releases go to On-Premise accounts only.

It's kind of pathetic, and stupid in my mind.

While I was chatting with the guy at our new Specs near me the other day, he was showing me the list of Key holders and where they sit on the allocated list. There are a few guys with tens of thousands of dollars of purchases annually.

I'm not going to compete with that ever. That being said, both he, and one other guy I know at another Specs do keep their own lists and try to bypass the system when they can, to get bottles into the hands of what they consider good customers.

It is an NDP so it doesn't get discussed on these boards often but it is a decent tasting whiskey IMO.
