I have learned recently that it's not uncommon to blend a couple of Bourbons together or Whiskeys together to come up with a Special Blend, that is considered to be a step above the ones used to mix the blend.

So far I am aware of using WLW 12yo at 40% with WLA 107 at 60% or even a 50/50 blend of same and coming up with a quality SB.

I also learned today about a Scotch blend of 70%/80% JW Black and 20%/30% Ardbeg 10yo and coming up with a very likable SB

What blending have you ever done and liked the results?

Also, just FYI, the term "SB Blend" around here means something very specific - the W12 / OWA vat - it stands for Straight Bourbon Blend. So while a lot of vatting of other 'special blends' does happen, when someone refers to SB Blend, they are referring to the W12/OWA.

I second checking out the vatting thread. You will find lots of info on what folks are doing and how it turned out.

I have a decanter that I put the last less than full pour of every bottle in. Bourbon, rye, and all levels of proofs. When it fills up in a month or so I start pouring and I must say it is always delicious.

Check out Gillman's postings on vatting, truly fascinating stuff about successful blending of different whiskeys. Gary is the master. Gillmanized, is the popular term.

Thank you for the heads-up!
