Most like WR Dist Sel ?....OF Sig or OF86?

Hello,

I found I REALLY like Woodford Reserve Distiller Select.

I'd like to find something comparable that's a touch cheaper.

What I really like about the WR is the sweet rich flavored smoothness...jeez I like that stuff..lol

I'm thinking that Old forester 86 or old forester signature might be the best bet for being a less expensive yet similar pour.

It would be appreciated if any of the group with experience with these could chime in and point me toward the Old forester most similar to the WR in the sweet/rich/smooth dept.

Go for the Signature and add a splash of water if it's too hot for you. I've never found the Sig to be particularly hot, though.

Yeah, I think many of us here would endorse the OF Signature instead of Woodford Reserve. OF Signature is cheaper, and better than Woodford IMO. Familial resemblance, but without much of the metallic taste that I often get from Woodford. Otherwise, you might give 1792 RR or Henry McKenna BIB a go as well--they are both similarly priced in the $30 range, and have a bolder profile that you might like.

It's truly just a $$$ thing. I had the woodford at a party last weekend. ...So...3 bottles and $80 appx I could do just that.

Would be fun till I wanted to eat something too...lol

I love doing side x sides. The cool thing is my Wife is getting into it a bit...at least she's trying everything I bring home..sometimes even enjoying and wanting more.

It's cool having someone to taste with.

'Tis true, too true. F'rinstance, I don't care for OF Sig even after one full bottle spread over six months (mostly neat, a few tries w/varying amounts of water) while another (a gift) sits unopened on the shelf. BUT, OF Birthday is just fine with me. Go figure. Is also interesting because, based on manymany postings, TT and I share a love for several other brands even though we differ on OF Sig. Again, go figure. So, your approach - try them all - is an excellent approach. No need to figure THAT out.:cool:

WOW that's a scary thought...I have 10 years till my boy is ready/legal. lol

I've really indulged just thrice thus far. One bottle of EC12 SB as you mentioned...right now it's my second place pour.

Another was about 9 months ago when I was exploring which family of whisk(e)y beat my drum. I picked up a bottle of johnnie walker black..around $42 in my parts.

..that bottle is still about 2/3 full. Just way to peated and oily for me.

Third is a BIG bottle of WellerSR...couldn't get a 750 anywhere. I'm working on draining that one as I type..and it's all alone in the cabinet...until I can can part with $25 for another experiment.

Hard to spend $20-30 on an experiment when I KNOW I could spend $30 on some WRDS and be very happy....just wouldn't satisfy my curiosities.

Not crying...heck I'm in the same boat as 90%+ lol

Weird...email said there was a reply about not trying Laphroaig...( which was in jest as I stated my dislike for smoky scotch in general)

I'd try it with a somewhat open mind..just to say I did it and have the memory.

It actually sorta t's me off that I don't care for scotch. I really thought I would. I enjoy wood smoke smell, campfires etc. I enjoy smoked meats,cheeses, fish. Heck I put liquid smoke in a fair amount of dishes I cook.

I have thought that my experience using and tasting liquid smoke may have effected my outlook on scotch. When I taste the peatedness (if that's a word) of scotch, it tastes to me as if someone spiked my bourbon with half rotten liquid smoke.

This reminds me..I have been thinking of adding a drop of liquid smoke to some bourbon just to see how scotch-like it tastes...just for fun.

Seems sacrilegious....but WTH..I paid for it..my taste buds.......at least it's not cola..lol

Shoot if you're already a frequent user of the all by itself sacrilegious liquid smoke, might as well add a dash to your bourbon!

I know I know...I'd rather real smoke....but ya know, when it's 2 am and you're in the mood for smoked fish dip on crackers a little tuna, mayo, pepper and some liq smoke isn't too bad..lol

So I just tried it....must say it's the 2nd best "scotch" I've ever had...lol ( fav scotch is Dalwhinnie 15)

Just put 1 drop into what may have been about 1/2 oz of Weller SR.

The oil of the smoke really smoothed the drink right out.

The smoke wasn't real strong..just kinda there backing things up.

The smoke/oil did cover up some of the bourbon flavors that were barely noticeable straight from the bottle.

Surprisingly pretty good...whodathunk?
