Expensive bottles that were a dissapointment

Depending on what you call an expensive bottle, I was very disappointed in the bottle of Booker's i bought. I have many barrel strength bourbons and love them, but this is not my cup of tea, far too hot and astringent for my tastes, and nothing unique there to keep my interest. Will probably just turn the bottle into a mixer.

Excellent timing for your post as I came here to say the same thing. I bought the '14 AECS on the basis of glowing reviews from numerous blogs who have steered me in the right direction in the past. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. I can't even drink the stuff - can't get to the bottom of a pour due to port bomb that blows up in my mouth that coincides with some sort of unnatural funky taste on the finish.

I've been waiting for a special occasion to open up my AECS, sounds like I may be hyping it up more than it deserves. it's been a regret of mine due to the price, it'll be an even bigger regret if I don't enjoy the bottle!

I only have two that I can think of off the top of my head. Woodford Reserve Masters Collection Sonoma Cutrer, and Woodford Reserve Masters Collection Four Grain.

It depends on how one defines both "expensive" and "disappointment". If I'm spending more than $70 or so on a bottle, I'll consider it expensive, although I've dropped at least that much coin on many bottles (and I don't dabble in the secondary market). I'm looking for a unique and, hopefully, awesome pour, particularly when the price gets over $100. In the sense that I like the bourbon, I'm not sure any of them have been disappointments. In the sense that I liked it so much that I definitely think it was worth the price and would buy another one for the same price? I'd say many if not most of my expensive bottles have been a disappointment. Example - I really liked Wild Turkey Diamond, thought it an elegant and refined pour. Was it worth the $110, or whatever it was that I spent on it? Pretty easy for me to say "No". Rhetoric? Enjoyed it, but I'd have been better off with a 4RSB, an EC12 and OGD114. A WFE 10 year for $90 and a Pappy 20 at MSRP? Yeah, they were both worth it. EC21? Not really. I guess for me part of it is just the experience. I have a collection with a lot of variety and I've tasted a lot of things. No regrets.

Oh, that's distressing to hear because the Revival is next on my list of Scotches to buy. I'll probably still take the leap, because everyone's taste is different. Chacun à son goût!

EDITED: I just checked and Total has jacked it up from $77 to $88. Might reconsider.

I disagree- Glendronach 15 Revival is one of the best sherried single malts out there for a reasonable price. I still see it for $80 near me. A much better value than Macallan 18. If you want one with kick, though, go with Aberlour Abunadh.

A Signatory bottle of Glenturret which cost me (about 5 yrs ago) $120. Gave it away it was so bad. The friend I gave it to chocked it down & said it was pretty grim.

I think the closest would be my 2013 OFBB that, while I haven't opened yet, I did try at a Dallas tasting and wasn't that impressed

Same here, OFBB '13.

I was looking forward to this one considering the way others on here like it. It was ok, but just didn't do it for me, especially for $55. Would rather have had a "standard" $30-$35 bottle of something else and kept the extra $20 in my pocket.

Agree 100%.....I meant a mixer for other people. Bourbon n Coke (soda in general) makes me sick.

Water, milk, and bourbon is all a man needs.

I just can't handle mixed drinks anymore..just don't agree with me. The exception is a mint julep (and I sure didn't have the ingredients handy for that). A bourbon and coke gives me an immediate headache. Beer makes me feel bad as well. It's weird what changes happen as you age.

For Bourbon, I Bib and Tucker a disappointment at $50. Bulliet 10 was a disappointment for the extra $$$. Not a bourbon, but years ago I enjoyed Stranahan's. Then it disappeared. I found a bottle and not sure what changed, but I can't finish the bottle.

Just about every "craft" distilled bourbon I've tried.
