Wow...just now read all o f this. What Joe said earlier was correct. I was (still am) new here. I missed his orginal PMs and then when I finally saw them, the hostility turned me off to coming back here for a while.

Anyway, I later sent the guy a PM with the name of the store and an offer to stop by to check their inventory and current price. He replied with an aoplogy, which I just now read. I accept.

I came here to learn and have fun.

Thanks all....

I think a lot of bourbon enthusiasts are like dogs or cats that chase the ball or the mouse on a string just because it's moving: they chase LEs and unicorns BECAUSE they're hard to get. The people most concerned with finding Van Winkles or BTAC or whatever don't seem to be the people who bought them when they were readily available---it seems that a lot of people who are actually familiar with those whiskeys don't have a big problem leaving them to the people who want to camp out to get them.

In any decent boozeteria, at any given time there will be plenty of very good bourbon on the shelves at regular retail prices. It's always fun and interesting to try something new or different, but for my part, I'm actually happiest knowing that stuff I like is readily available at reasonable prices.

I suppose there may be somebody out there who only enjoys bourbon that's extremely old, or who only likes Stitzel-Weller bourbon, or something like that. I pity that person, but if that was me, I'd probably find another hobby.

Or take up beer, which seems to have endless opportunities.

There's the same level of stupidity around limited releases in beer, but at least the supply/demand ratio is a little easier to control, and the "craft" products are actually generally pretty good.

Unicorn beers bother me because they are so clearly artificially scarce. With whiskey, you're limited to what was distilled X years ago and usually limited bottlings are actually limited because somebody 15 years ago or whenever didn't make more, or there's just not that much of it left, or the distillery's closed. But beers work on a much much shorter time line, so with most beers, a brewer could make more relatively quickly, so if it can't be found its simply because they didn't make as much of it as people wanted, to keep the feeding frenzy going. Screw those guys.

  • 5 weeks later...

The closer we get to release season this year, the less I want to deal with (or even pay attention) to the market. Been around a few years now and I've had my share. Tired of worrying about what I can get my grubby paws on.

It's frustrating to see the flipping already engaged with FRLE and OFBB. Many of us who would just like to get a bottle or two of the LE releases to enjoy will never get them because of the greedy bastards scooping them all up for profit. :hot: I have a decent bunker to fall back on so I'm not too upset. Just frustrated.

I'm not even enquiring about them. If they are offered to me a decent price well then yes I will buy but highly doubt that will happen.

Screw em.

I was just ranting about this in the BTAC thread (wrong one obviously - sorry mods). If I get the call, then I'm in. If no call, then I really could care less. I've got a bunker full of stuff waiting to be consumed.

It's definitely the best year yet to rise above this mess and take a breather.

This is what we bunkered for. It's here.

Thanks for saying it out loud. This was rolling around in my head, but I couldn't get it to focus. I even have a last year's GTS unopened in there. The opened one, which I have been intentionally avoiding, has been moved up front. We aren't getting any younger.

I'll second Harry's comment Paul. I'm sitting on multiple BTAC bottles, multiple 4R, SA, CEHT barrel proofers, multiple handles of discontinued AAA10yr, VOB 6 yr and who the hell knows what else!

I know you guys are bunkered equally, if not more than I. So yes, if there ever was a time to relax and let the masses fight it out on the front lines, this is it.

If I didn't still have to get out and work for a living, I'd probably just park my ass in my big leather chair and drink bourbon out of my trash can all year...

Wonder if anyone out there is already doing that?

I'd already gotten myself into that mindset a couple of years ago Paul. I'm very fortunate with what I have stashed away and getting a couple of bottles of the fall releases here and there without having to jump through hoops was icing on the cake.

That being said, found out last week that my big-ass ash tree is ravaged with the emerald ash borer beetles and needs to be removed - $1000. My well pump puked this morning - $1500. The pressure tank for the well needs to be replaced - $680. Getting 2 old dental fillings replaced tomorrow - $??. All of that means the bourbon budget is now non-existent anyway.

Oh, wait a minute...... I've got some private selection OWA and BT coming sometime soon. Crap

What? We're not all bunkering cans to keep bottles by the chair? Sounds like squire needs to get in line for the new limited release cans made from stitzel-weller barrel wood that survived the fire started by a tornado.

Well, I don't have the can.

Well, if you have deep cushions, a thick rug, a flat surface, . . .

Uh, you wouldn't be teasing us, would you?

And, Paddy, you put the BOTTLE in the trash can; you don't pour the bourbon in the trash can and drink from it. Sheesh. These kids.

I'm very happy drinking bunker-only for quite a while.

I have to start with clean up - the bottles I thought I'd like but wasn't so impressed with, and the buy everything/learn the profiles wave.

Working offshore for 6-9 months a year means my annual consumption requirements aren't that big, so even thinning the less-desirables/duds is going to take a while.

I also have a new girlfriend who is very into nice Spanish wine, so I'm about to get an education there. We're road tripping through France in October. Guess what the first stop is - The Armagnac Festival!!!

Between that, rum, and malts in the UK, I can easily wait out the frenzy and there isn't any risk of empty glassware for the next 5yrs at least. Life is good.

Good one Harry!

You and Squire need your own act! Just don't know who'd play the straight...

I agree with you but I don't see the secondary market slowing down. Just check bottle spot and you'll see Weller 12 and Elmer T (the only 2 I'm always searching for) for $60-$70 a bottle. I'm not sure what stops this. I

guess when Buffalo Trace can make much more. I've been fortunate and befriended a local shopowner and he will hold a 4R LE or a 10 yr Old Rip or 15 and not gouge me. But I'll be happy drinking Eagle Rare and the regular 4 Roses all day.

What stops it is when people get well and truly sick of paying the 60-70 for $30 bottles, and stop bothering.

But, do the horde that are storming the bourbon aisles really know that the $60-$70 bottle was/should be a $30 bottle? They keep coming, regardless of price. Well, we say they don't know any better. Who cares?!?! They are in, they like what they see, and they're willing to pay. Heck, for many, they're budgeting down from even more expensive scotch. WIN-WIN.

Don't underestimate the depth of this bourbon renaissance. This boom is much, much, more than just the whiskey bubble (ie secondary market).

Spelling and usage...though I'm still not sure I'm correct...:D

True Joe, but they'll find it for $30 after a while and say "hey!!!"

Given enough time, even the hordes learn how to buy what they want more efficiently.

The number of people I see swearing by the awesomeness of the likes of Kentucky Owl at one end of the spectrum, and the number of people I see willing to go for any and all NDP bottles because the marketing reels them in and they don't know any better at the other end of the spectrum, tells me that we have a long way to go yet.
