I would get a couple of what are rapidly developing to be my standards for type.

Talisker 10 year (65ish)

Four Roses SB (35ish)

I apologize in advance for careening off-topic, but I will not read anything on these boards today that will have the impact on me as this comparison does, and what it represents in so many ways.

I want to add that this is not a judgement or even comment on Mr RyeNots choices, at all. My apologies if it might appear so.

Must . . . poke . . . bear . . .

I guess if we are including scotch, I would alter my selection to:

Lagavulin 16 $44 (yes I can still buy it for that price. Suck it, the rest of the world)

Four Roses Single Barrel $30

Larceny or Bernheim, whichever looks better

And no, I didn't do that JUST to harass Joe. I also like Lagavulin 16.

2 Low Gaps, duh!

Just kidding... EC12, WTRB and 4RSB. Call a few buddies, open em up, light the fire pit and start telling lies. Hmm, it is Friday.

I agree 100% with what Joe says.

I don't mind comments, but I gotta say, maybe I'm slow, but I don't understand this comment. Could you fill me in? I appreciate it.

Depends. I'm a sucker for limited releases, so if one caught my eye...

Like the writer from the Chicagoist, assuming nothing crazy was on the shelf, I'd probably go with a bottle of Weller 12 and a 4 Roses Single Barrel (Private Barrel). The Weller 12 is such a nice, mellow bourbon, and the FRSB is nice and hot, and delicious.

Depending on where I get the FRSB, if I had $10 left over, I'd probably grab a bottle of Heaven Hill or something.

Joe is remarking on the quality/cost ratio of bourbon compared to scotch whisky. It is an undeniable truth that bourbon is a much much better value when it comes to the bottom and mid shelf offerings. I like to argue with him about QPR of bourbon vs malt whisky in the $50+ range every now and then, just to keep his blood pressure from bottoming out. But he's pretty much right. Just can't let it go to his head.

Most of the way there on my reasoning, but the lightbulb moment from earlier goes a little deeper, and really doesn't include my own thoughts on QPR. I'll write more later when I can sit down and compose something remotely cogent. :D. And, Zo better be careful or he's going to drive away his only friend on the board who is with him on liking the Stagg Jr. #1...:icon_pidu:

It struck me as a bit odd for a response since the question in the OP posed by the cited blog was what BOURBON would you buy if you had a $100 to spend. But maybe RyeNot just missed that part. Or maybe I missed something that led it off on a tangent as I did not read through the thread in detail.

Still, I too am curious to hear what Joe has to say once he gets time to get a couple of neurons to cogent...

HAH! No way you'd hate on good bourbon just because some other schlub likes it.

And fair enough, I'll let Joe interpret Joe's posts from now on.

The OP did not state bourbon versus whisk(e)y, but the linked article stated the following:

"It's really the age old question for bourbon-lovers isn't it? On what particular whiskey should a whiskey lover spend their [sic] hard-earned dollars? To best answer I decided to call in the cavalry and contacted a number of bourbon and whiskey bloggers, podcasters, writers an retailers and asked them to submit their own strategic allocation of a hundred bucks."

Possibly I interpreted that a bit too widely, but, because they used both bourbon and whiskey in the paragraph and invited both bourbon and whiskey bloggers, I took it to mean what, in the whisk(e)y genre, would you procure with $100.

Bottle of green chartreuse and a bottle of Rhum JM blanc.

My bunker is full of unobtanium to drink. I'd blow it on something not bourbon that I enjoy.

Hmm, I wonder how that would taste mixed...

In reality Green Chartreuse and Rhum Agricole, when added in a 1:1:1:1 ratio with lime juice and Maraschino liqueur makes a Dernier Mot (French for Last Word) which is a substitution of Rhum Agricole for gin in a tropical riff on the Last Word cocktail.

Lots of variations on that classic cocktail the best of which for this crowd might be the Final Ward (Rye, lemon juice, maraschino and green chartreuse).

I wouldn't worry too much about staying on topic here. The mods seem okay with minor bits of meandering.

Well, yeah, but I already have several of those. I was thinking more about what I'd get that I don't have a month's supply of already OR that was not already on my budgeted list OR that I'd buy with a $100 I found just outside the store.

I hadn't seen this posted and thought it was a fun read. The guys at ModernThirst (I believe he still posts here?) posed this question on their site to a few writers. I thought it a fun read and worth a share for anybody who hasn't seen it yet.

http://modernthirst.com/2015/04/29/if-i-had-a-benjamin-post-central/

What say you?

4RSmB ($27)

OWA ($25)

EC12 ($25)

OGD114 ($18)

$5 for bitters!

Hey guys! Still here, but I don't post as often since our office blocked pretty much any message boards.

Some nice responses here...can't say I'd argue with them. It's been a fun series to involve so many other writers and see the diversity of opinions.

KC single barrel and either a handle of EC12, or a 10-year Smooth Ambler.
