What is the difference between Russell's Reserve Small Batch Single Barrel Bourbon and Wild Turkey Russells' Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 10 year old?

The 10 year is 90 proof, the single barrel is 8-9 years (according to the WT website) and 110 proof.

Which one is the better bourbon? I have a bottle of the 10 year and find it a little bit thin.

I also find the 90 thinnish and much prefer the single barrel. Unfortunately, it's also more expensive. I usually don't pull the trigger on it unless I come across a really dark in color store selection bottling.

I've only had the RR10 but I really like it, more than WT101. But I'll say that my sweet spot proof-wise is 90-100 so that's why I haven't even gone for the, hang on, let me see if I can get this right, the RRSmBSB 110 proof.

You'll be happy to know that they've cleared a new label in which they clearly call it "Single Barrel".

I prefer the single barrel to the 10yr small batch, but yes, it's pricey.

from my understanding, small batch has a broad meaning with no legal definition. single barrel on the other hand does have a legal definition and means something very specific. so when it says "small batch, single barrel" it technically is both because it doesn't get any smaller then single. people being cynical, immediately imagine shady practices when they see the term small batch. which i endorse fully, question everything. so they are removing it to finally put a nail in that coffin.

what ever they call, it doesn't matter. it's definitely going to have a spot on my shelf.

I believe it was someone in this forum who asked Eddie himself why it was called that and was told that it was a mistake that made it past the proofreaders and they didn't catch it in time. It was always meant to simply say "single barrel".

As near as I can tell single barrel is a useless expression as well. Of course a sensible person will interpret that literally as all coming from one barrel and I expect the responsible distillers are doing just that.

Yet the law doesn't distinguish between single barrel and single container so if an unscrupulous person decides to call a 500 gallon plastic tote a 'single barrel' who's to stop him.

I have a bottle of the small batch, and it's definitely one of the bottles I almost regret getting. I just can't get into it. I kind of wanted a bottle of the single barrel, but not after I got the small batch. think the single batch is that much better than the small batch?

I think you mean single "barrel", and yes, it's much better.

Never had the small batch but there is some fantastic single barrel out there. See if your local shop offers samples prior to purchase, I found a very good one and wound up with several.

Echoing the choir above, yes the single barrel is much better. The cost is the only reason that I don't purchase it more, as I find that the RB is bang for the buck much closer in profile.

Guess I'll be the guy who goes against the grain here. I'm a fan of WTRR and have bought a few bottles recently figuring it might not be long before another age stated whiskey goes away. Don't have anything to base that on, just a hunch. While it certainly isn't as good as the old RR101 (which I'm down to one bottle of) it's still a damn fine bourbon IMHO

The Binny's near me has a store select version so maybe I'll swing by and pick one up, but they do charge a premium for the store select, coming in at $55 instead of the usual $50. and the price is what has kept me away from the single barrel, that's why I went for the small batch first, at $35.

I bought a bottle from barrel 954, and must say it might be my favorite bottle. I dont recall the Oak Brook location having it at $55. Pretty sure it was the same $49.

I bought a generic RRSmBSB and found it to be quite lacking - at best average bourbon and definitely not worth the price. Once I finished it I swore I'd never buy another. But my local got a store select version, I had a sample and thought it was quite good, so I bought one and do not regret it.

I love the 10yr small batch, it is my go to bourbon. Smooth and flavorful. I have been meaning to pick up a bottle of the single barrel, but I have vowed to drink down my supplies first

So how does Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey fit into this discussion? It is the most expensive of the three. Since I enjoy Wild Turkey 101, I thought I try some of their other offerings.

You may want to try Rare Breed. It has some older whiskey in it, not crazy expensive either.
