Favorite Flask Bourbon

There are bourbons I really like and there are bourbons that are perfect in a flask - the overlap between those two categories is smaller than I'd like it to be.

Lately I've been reaching for Weller Special Reserve because it's cheapish (sub $25 near me), it's a wheater so I find it a touch smoother, and it's only 90 proof so it goes down easy. For me, those characteristics also make it a good choice for sharing. I also find Mellow Corn makes a fine flask whiskey - although at 100 proof it can be a bit sharp on the palate when drinking straight and warm from your pocket. Does anyone else have a particular favorite for a flask bourbon?

Well, let me preface this with a caveat...

First one must define the particular occasion a little.

If it's for personal relaxation at an event I expect to be disappointed by the available offerings, I'd go with a fave that's easy to drink neat and won't get me readily plastered... such as Buffalo Trace.

If it's to offer to a particular friend a dram he/she has yet to experience, then that dram would be the choice.

If it's a rowdy fere-for-all I might grab WT 101, or even OGD114.

When I used a flask it was filled with higher octane whisky, usually RVW 107.

I am not sure why, I guess it's just an old habit, but when I am going to use a flask, which is not often, I usually fill it with FR Yellow Label.

WSR was my answer before I opened the thread. Second might be FRYL, but I've never used anything else in recent memory.

Weller 12 is my flask drinker of choice. Seems to be the one non-bourbon drinkers like most when they invariably ask me for a swig.

I don't understand why bourbon in a flask is different from what I would put in a glass. If I decide to use a flask, I look at what is open in my liquor closet and simply select one. That is the same way I decide what to put in a glass. I select whatever interests me that day. Flask or glass has no impact.

The last few times I've used a flask it still had some left over from the previous use. I just fill it with whatever is handy. So the current flask is a mix of at least EWSB, ER10 and MM, maybe some EC12 or even some JD in there. I have no idea what the ratios are, but it tasted pretty damn good!

The reason I differentiate is that some of my friends are not particular about their whiskey and they'll enjoy a shot of EWW just as much as they'd enjoy a shot of WLW. And while I don't mind sharing my limited supply of WLW - I prefer to share it with those who might appreciate it. Plus some whiskies I really like to savor over time and it's hard to savor a whisky for more than a few minutes when drinking from a flask.

Hhhhm. Got a titanium flask years ago. For some reason, WT 101 tastes great from it. Decided not to mess with success.

I'm with my Dad and Doug - it depends what I want to drink. If I'm packing a flask for a business trip, I try to imagine what my mood will be after a long day of meetings, or what I might have for dinner, etc. If going to a poker game where everyone but me is drinking beer, I'm likely to fill with a value pour that I don't mind chasing with Diet Coke.

The question is, am I prepared before hand? I have a few flasks that stay in the house, and that is what I will fill with my bourbon of choice. I also leave one in the trunk of the car. It is always full. For those occasions when you arent prepared. JW Dant is the car bourbon of choice. Tasty neat. Inexpensive, so I dont mind leaving it in the FL sun. And if a friend would like to mix with it, Ive got no issues. I keep it in the underneath compartment with a set of tools, poker chips, a change of clothes, and a blanket. Ive got all of my bases covered.

I pretty much put Jack Daniels in a flask. If it's in a flask it usually means I'm trying to hide it and am going to put it in a coke anyway:-)

Last time I used a flask was in Vegas (had EWB in it), which served a dual purpose. It kept me from buying too many expensive drinks at the bar, and supplemented the drinks that the cocktail waitresses brought around when they were moving slow.

Pretty much, my flask bourbon goes along with which flask I'm taking. That is, if I'm taking a flask because I have to sneak a whiskey in, I'm taking a cheap flask and cheap bourbon, in case it gets confiscated. If I'm taking a flask simply because taking the bottle is logistically impractical, then I take anything that I want to drink, and in my best flask.

For much the same reason, I use FRYL and make Seal-A-Meal disposable flask. 2 oz for the bourbon and 6 oz for my wife's wine. We had them stuck everywhere for a recent Widespread Panic concert. One popped out of my sock going through security so I just left it on the floor.....
