for those who mix, is there one whiskey that just tastes better / smoother than the other with cola being the foundation?

seems most of SB just mix their least favorite purchase.

If its 90 and I am hot and sweating I usually grab an ice cold beer, but if its 90 and I am kicked back in my recliner with the AC blasting, yeah a bourbon neat sounds pretty good.

My thoughts exactly...

I don't like mixing bourbon with anything. It's just a personal preference, never tasted right.

Rum & Coke... love it (don't matter what rum). Crown & Coke, Seagram's 7 & Coke.... love it (Seagram's & Coke was my drink for the longest). But I never got into Jack & Cock or Beam & coke... just never tasted right.

I just don't even think about mixing bourbon with anything.

I recently discovered the joys of mixing bourbon with a little simple syrup and Angostura bitters, the classic Old Fashioned. It seems to make bourbons I like even better, and that splash of simple syrup seems to do wonders with taming alcohol bite.

I avoided Bourbon for a long time because my early experiences in college were "Beam and cokes." I couldn't stand them and, since I like coke, it must have been the Bourbon that made it taste bad. Fast forward 25+ years, and it's still the same: I like coke, I love Bourbon, but together I find them repulsive. So for me, I only mix Bourbon when making an old fashioned or a Manhattan, or the occasional mint julep. YMMV.

I'm not a big fan of bourbon with soda or mixers. The bourbon and ginger ale mixes have just tasted off to me, though I like ginger ale. Who knows?

I can not think when the last time I used a mixer with Bourbon. When I was in college I put coke or 7 up in it but that was 40 years ago. Straight for me with some ice now. Neat when I open a new bottle. The bottles I don't like I give to the wife. She will drink anything. LOL

I guess that I'm omni- bourbonian. I like it neat, with a cube, in a classic cocktail (Manhattan, old fashioned, sour), I cook with it, and occasionally enjoy it with a splash of ginger beer or ale. Much depends on circumstances and mood. I just like bourbon.

I try every bourbon neat but I drink everything mostly with ginger ale after the first dance. Meh, it's just my thing.

Well, I'm drinking mostly dusty bourbon, and I'm finding it harder and harder to find mixers appropriate to the era. I just finished my last bottle of New Coke, and am down to three 12oz bottles of Crystal Pepsi. Does anyone know where I can find more dusty soda? It just doesn't taste the same with current product.

Nice!

Crystal Pepsi, wasn't that the one with the commercial with "Right Now," the Van Hagar song?

I will order a Manhattan frequently when we go out to eat in the summer (which in Houston is April 15 to October 15 lol!). I make mint juleps at home and when I am outside grilling in the summer I always have my bourbon on the rocks. I will occasionally add a little lemon and club soda. BTW OGD114 makes a helluva great mint julep.

In my younger days it was Crown (Royal) and coke or Beam and coke. That doesn't appeal to me anymore.

I recently bought Weller SR for the first time and I wasn't really happy with it neat, so I mixed it with Coke and it was delicious.

I'm on vacation and can pick up a liter of Benchmark No 8 for $10 or a liter of Old Charter 8 for $15. Both are NAS. Which should I pick up and based on my WSR experience, do you think they will be relegated to mixers?

Old Charter 8 is not bad on it's own considering the price. It's in the BT family. I primarily use it in vattings with Stagg Jr. to bring the proof down and round of the rough edges. It hasn't been necessary with Stagg Jr. batch 3, but I still have bottles of batch 2. It excels in these vattings.

I drink all my bourbon mixed. I don't know how you guys can drink it neat. My go to's are EHT Cured Oak and Coke and Pappy 15 and Grape Crush.

LMAO! Pappy and Grape Crush, I like your sense of humor!

Rum is my usual mixer. Rum and coke and a splash of lime. Delicious. Bourbon I don't mix though. I don't even like what ice does to the flavor.

I couldn't edit my post above with regard to the Pappy and Grape crush... But I wanted to show this video because I can just hear the gasp when meadeweber posted his special mix. haha

I have only blended Jack with Coke back in the day. I have mixed Bourbons and Ryes but that's about it.

Fozzy, we know you do a lot of that.

I'm waiting for the patented Fozzy Blend. I'm pretty sure it will include OGD 114.

me too, and that is a safe bet. I was going to mix up something new yesterday but didn't have an open OGD114 so I had to put those plans on hold....

I love mixing whiskey with soda, usually a good ginger ale, but it has been a very long time since I mixed anything with cola. In my experience, the best ones to mix with ginger ale have some rye in them and are fairly assertive. On the cheap side, FC6 does quite well. Actually just any about any rye recipe from Heaven Hill will work. One of my absolute favorites, though, is 2011 Old Forester Birthday bourbon with ice and some extra gingery brew. Dangerously delicious.
