Palate Cleansers

Unusual question, I'm hoping someone can help me out. I have been to a few events at Heaven Hill, and every time I'm there they have these little bread/cookie pellets in bowls to cleanse your palate between drinks. They are mostly tasteless, but have a small hint of vanilla. The wife and I are planning to do some blind tastings this weekend, and I was wondering if anyone knows what these pellets are called and where I can get some?

Also, so this thread doesn't die on the vine if nobody knows the answer, what are your favorite palate cleansers in between bourbons? Obviously, these things are mine if i can find them!

Between bourbon, I usually drink a full glass of water. As much as I like eating, I find that if I have a cracker or something it alters my palate! Maybe I should try berries or some kind of fruit.

I enjoy chocolate. Don't know if it cleanses the palate or not, but it sure as hell tastes good with bourbon and rye!

For my tastings we would slice a baguette of French bread into thin rounds which were then lightly toasted.

I like unsalted crackers and a few sips of water or mild flavored cheese and plain bread. I try to keep the flavors as bland as possible. Anything too sweet, salty, etc may give you that "orange juice after brushing your teeth" flavor experience.

Can't beat plain water; but, chocolate (especially dark) does indeed enhance Bourbon tasting. I'm pretty sure it would be altering the impressions of whatever pours follow the chocolate, though.

I've also found pretzels (the ones I eat are gluten-free, if that matters) to be a reliable in-between-munch; but I'll usually wash the pretzels down with copious amounts of water, if my mission is analytical rather than just 'enjoyment pours'.

Found them! Apparently I hit upon the right google search. They are called wine crackers. They are fantastic palate cleansers when paired with some water, have some on order now. Some great suggestions so far, I will have to try out the chocolate.

That link is to a 12-pack x 10oz. (120 oz. Total). That's 7 pounds of crackers...a lifetime supply!

The chocolate thing is true! I first found this out with some unexpected freshly baked chocolate chip cookies being served with OGD BIB which was a fantastic combo! I've since tried it with little bits of both dark and milk chocolate and found the combo to be delicious.

Ok I'll be the first to admit it. I'm just too lazy to do it. I "cleanse" with a pour of different bottle and figure by the second pour of new bottle my palate has been cleansed.

I will give chocolate a shot though, all in the name of science.

I'll be the second to admit it, I do the same.

While not a cleanser dark chocolate is a fantastic compliment, love me some dark chocolate and bourbon, popeyes fried chicken ain't so bad either. On topic, I like Squires toasted baguette, think I will use that in the future for "serious" evaluations.

At Four Roses barrel picks they always have plain (it is probably a specific brand but I can't remember what it is at the moment) corn tortilla chips available. If it works for Jim Rutledge then it seems good enough for me!

Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible suggests black coffee or 90% cocoa chocolate as palate cleansers. Any dark chocolate works for me.

Just eat a kielbasa and keep drinking![emoji14]

Well I have tried Croghan baloney and that works but then again I really wasn't trying to clear my palate at the time, I just had the munchies.

Look what you all went and made me do at Kroger today:

Always a guilty pleasure but not exactly a high cacao content dark chocolate! I think a more bitter dark chocolate tends to work better than milk chocolate although that might just be snobbery on my part!
