CorvallisCracker
Just trying to fill an information vacuum, I guess.http://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2015/08/05/japans-suntory-to-send-its-whisky-to-space-for-science/
Harry in WashDC
Sounds like a boondoggle to me. Who's going to carry it up there? Suntory's majority owner?
tanstaafl2
Sounds like a boondoggle to me. Who's going to carry it up there? Suntory's majority owner?Japan has a large science module on the International Space Station. I expect Suntory is paying (a bunch for this little publicity stunt I suspect!) to have it shipped there the same way all other supplies get up there these days, by rocket. The Japanese have a Space Center from which they launch resupply rockets to the Space Station located on an island south of Kyushu with a flight scheduled for August 16th. JAXA is Japan's equivalent to NASA.
latech15
I predict a dud. It can't be going in barrels. Aging in (probably) plastic won't help much. Neat experiment though. I bet it's costly.

I bet it's costly. The article notes it will be in flasks. Presumably plastic rather than glass. Barrels of any kind would certainly seem impractical if for no other reason than weight. I suppose they think the molecules being in a weightless environment will make a difference in the taste (more "mellow" whisky is apparently the goal. I don't particularly want "mellow" whisky myself!) but it does indeed sound rather dubious to me. An expensive marketing stunt gone wild.
Harry in WashDC
. . . but it does indeed sound rather dubious to me. An expensive marketing stunt gone wild.Agreed, dubious. Yup, stunt/wild. Ergo: Boondoggle. Now if they want to pay me to carry up some flasks in my pockets . . .
Golzee
I wonder if we will see any mini bottles for sale? The quantity of whiskey has to be minimal, but, I bet some people would pay a ton of money for space aged juice.

Jefferson Aged in Space, because rocketship vibrations add a whole new dimension to barrel-whiskey interaction.

B.B. Babington
zero gravity will have zero effect. but the purpose is obvious. they'll do some scientific type experimenting in white lab coats then bottle the leftovers (most of it) into mini's to give to dignitaries and other influentials.
