Had a pour of WT MK. A small sample sent to me by my baby boy, Gary. Woody, dry, interesting, decent-but-not-fabulous-nose, nice enough palate if you like oaky, decently long-but-rather-sour-finish, also oaky.

All in all, impressions are not much different than the sample I had at the gazebo a couple months ago. Not sorry I passed on it; even at retail.

Followed that with a pour from a rapidly emptying bottle of a particular barrel of EWSB '05.

"Picked" by Meijer's (a midwest 'supersteore' that has many outlets in our area); barrel #585. Yummy!!!! ...And, at about one quarter, or even one fifth the price of MK!

Opened the WT Russel's Reserve a bit ago, not picking up much of a nose and just a sip into the first glass but this is much "hotter" than their other releases even only being at 102.2 proof, definitely pick up the Oak influence in the dry tannins but the finish is lasting with spice, vanilla, buttersctoch and the oak. A good solid pour. Worth $250 a bottle? Doubtful but then again is anything?...

I'll let this sit in the glass for a bit to open up then see what changes.

RHF for my first pour of the night after yet another hectic week. Is it just me or does a bourbon taste much better after you've "earned it"? I wasn't too impressed when I first tried this bottle of RHF a couple weeks ago. However, right now it's hitting all the right spots. It's Friday night, no more work, good hockey to watch tonight, bourbon in my glass, life is good. Cheers!

Started the weekend with a pour of 2014 FRLESB at my favorite liquor store. Going to open a 1792 port finish and a private barrel select of Kentucky Spirit with my buddy tonight.

Taking advantage of a break in the week long rain we've been having to sit out front. Enjoying a hefty pour of the GBS KCSB, and the dueling sounds of the local high school football game cheering and band, and the band at the local wing joint music, blaring in the distant.

Uh oh, based on the music, the visiting Lassiter Trojans just scored...:(

Revisiting this post from earlier. This really opened up after some time in the glass and the finish was outstanding.

Please post some tasting notes when y'all try that Dant. Fricky or BorbonJoe shared some with us at the Sampler this year. Not a 10 year, but it was bottled in either 51 or 52. It was excellent. If your bottle is anywhere near as good, I'm betting you and your club members will be happy campers.

Cheers and enjoy!

Joe

I'm not huge on notes but here goes: after 46! years of being sealed I got unmistakable bourbon when we popped the cork. A coworker got cologne. In the glass the nose was all sweet bourbon. First takes on taste were evenly split between medicinal and sweet glorious bourbon. I fell into the latter camp though there was something astringent. It opened up with a little air time. The medicinal notes went away. Most found a syrupy mouthfeel. Maybe the mouthfeel reminiscent of cough syrup and the cherry taste was what came off as medicinal? In any case there was sweetness and also some heat, more red hot candy than pepper. The finish wasn't particularly memorable. I'm happy with the bottle. It was my first real dusty and while not life changing it was a pleasurable pour and a taste of history. I let the empty glass sit for a bit and it actually smelled old, kinda like a slightly musty old study scented by years of tobacco and old books. Maybe it was real, maybe it was the romantic in my head.

Last night had some FRSiB, earlier in the week was able to try some OGD at a work function. It was a step up from the Jim Beam they also had, but not something I would keep on hand.

Started with some RHF while watching the nightmare that is Kentucky football. Then transitioned to some WFE 11 yr from Packages and More that I helped select (my last bottle of this wonderful stuff). Thanks goodness basketball is right around the corner.

Stared with a small pour of SAOS, then realized there was only a little over a finger pour left in my bottle of ER, so that's in my glass now. Cheers!

IWH 15 and football. Oak and leather in the mouth; honey, spice and coffee on the flat, and moderately long, finish.

It's been an Eagle Rare night so far. I purchased a store select today so I've been tasting it sbs with a standard bottle. They are clearly different from each other but I can't declare one better than the other. The store select has more barrel influence in a positive way. I think I get chocolate at the beginning of the finish (which is the first time I've associated this flavor with a bourbon even though I read that description in a lot of notes of bourbons I like). Though I can't declare a winner, I'm very happy to have a different variation and may get another. I'm now having some ER17 just to keep it in the family.

Started the night of with a pour of PVW20 and then stayed in the "Wheater" category with a nice pour of W12.

OGD BIB was on sale in a VA ABC store. I bought two and opened one. Busy day so I'm relaxing with it while watching Cal at Oregon - two teams I don't see a lot back here.

Just ate like a king, I will post a pic to the sandwich thread next time...But, back on topic, passed a bottle of David Nicholson BIB around the garage tonight while working on my dads Buick. DNBIB suprised me, I read that the glory days of this bourbon had passed, yet, I still think it is a very respectable sub $20 bottle.
