An enjoyable pour while relaxing with my father and discussing his memories of WWII in the Pacific. It is incredible how much the world has changed during his lifetime. My only lasting impression was "So this is what people are obsessively clearing the shelves of?"Not even sure I'd use it in the bourbon cream recipe I wanted to try... If someone paid $50 and up for a bottle, they'd probably be let down a little. Not saying those apply to you, but just pointing that out.I hear what you're saying... didn't chase it, and paid retail for it ($32, I think...too lazy to check the OLCC website.) Grabbed one the last time it came around because I wanted to try it. Don't see myself getting another right now. Just such a stark comparison to the SB Blend I had the night before. That makes trying to track down OWA and W12 worth it.Gonna give it another chance, but thinking about cracking an RHF I got over the summer for a little side-by-side, too. RHF is definitely one of my desert island bourbons. RHF can be a bit hard to wrap your head around, as there is a lot going on. But it is outstanding stuff IMO. I have had some really great bottles and some that were meh. The best I had was the ETL commemorative from a few years ago. Of course, the bump in proof probably helped some. flahute Posted November 14, 2015 Share Posted November 14, 2015 Decided to make tonight a Turkey night. Started with RR10 and the palate wasn't liking it at first. Halfway through the pour, it's as if the whiskey overcame whatever it was that was getting in the way of enjoying that pour. Last few sips were excellent. Moved on to WT101 12yr. First opened this bottle last weekend and it started out too woody - bitter and tannic - with a moment or two of brilliance trying to slip through. Tonight it's much different. The wood is there still in a pleasant way and it's getting closer to being balanced, though not there yet. Maybe the third pour will be the proverbial charm.RRSB is on deck. Huge bittersweet chocolate, brown sugar and cola with vanilla extract on the finish - as with most of my bottles of this, it's gotten better the longer bottle has been open. I'm sticking previous assessments though - this is so dense and monolithic that it's not a bourbon I would grab 4 times in one night. Had a nice time but it was cold out and the fire wasn't ideal for me to be able to taste much.I switched over to scotch at the end and tried some of his Gordon & Macphail. It was the most unpleasant whiskey I have ever tried, and not recommended after a 4RSB. It had a finish that tasted like Listareine. Mouth wash.
