Although it gets mixed reactions around here, I really like the fruity elemnet that I pull out of the Antique Weller, and the long smooth finish a good wheated bourbon has. I am interested to see what you think.

I'd really be interested in your reaction to the Old Weller Antique 107 7yo as well, as it's the only Weller I have access to. So far I've been reluctant to buy it, but considering the accolades the 12yo has, I've been tempted.

Why is the 12yo so universally liked, but the 7yo gets a mixed reaction? Are they really that different? Also, why is the 7yo nicknamed the "Baby Van Winkle"...is it truly one of Julian's?

I have have had a 7yr Weller that was a special reserve, lower proof, and thoroughly enjoyed it, I would have to say that the Weller Antique couldn't be that much different. But that is me. I have always liked the Weller bourbons and now that i know where to get it (thanks for letting me know about Montgomery County) I will be the next time I am up there.

I say go for it, I think you wold have nothing to lose.

In the for-whatever-it's-worth department:

I think the Weller's 7yo Special Reserve is one of the great values in bourbon-dom. And, my early samplings of my recent Weller's 12yo purchase show it, too, to be a superior bourbon. The Centennial Weller's (10yo) is complex in a spectacular way. Somehow, though, I've never tried the 107 Antique, though it's on almost any liquor store shelf here in TN. I'm putting it on my 'note to self' list right now. I expect to like it.

I think personally that the Weller 12 has a more rounded, richer, "classic" bourbon taste, and that may be why it is more liked, It is smooth and drinkable, with lots and lots of vanilla and caramel, closer to the Weller Centennial in feel than Van Winkle stuff. I have heard by contrast that some find the Antique a tad on the astringent side or maybe too young, though I have not had that problem.

I have had the Weller Centennial and loved it...how does it compare to the Weller 12 head to head? I am eager to try the 12yr but as you know it is not sold in Ohio and I will have to wait till my next trip to Cincinnati and "go over the river". I REALLY regret not ever getting a taste of Weller 19, and now it is gone forever. I once had a chance to get Weller 19 at Corknbottle in Covington but they also had Stagg...what a dilemma!! chose Stagg thinking I would get Weller19 next time but now I can't.
