Welcome to the third VOTM. This month, we will be taking a look at Squire's suggested vatting of Very Old Barton BIB and Old Grand Dad BIB. As before, the default blend could be a 1:1 ratio, but with room for experimentation and further discussion. Unfortunately, I cannot get VOB BIB where I live, but for those who can obtain it, I hope you will give this vatting a try and report your thoughts here!

I actually tried this back when squire first recommended it a month or so ago. I thought it worked well. I didn't give it any time to mingle and it was good so I imagine a few days of mingling will make it even better. I'll give it another try.

Hmm, not sure if I have ever seen VOB on a shelf up here but according to our state site it is available. I need to restock OGDBIB so I will see if I can find one of these as well.

I tried it several months ago. I'd say it's a real synergy, with the better qualities of each whiskey complementing instead of stepping on each other. The VOB sweetens the OGD, and the OGD brings the solid background of spice and cereal notes for the VOB to play against.

The resulting complexity of the blend makes a much more interesting drink than either one alone, especially VOB.

As I posted on the initial "Let's have a VOTM thread" thread when Squire mentioned this, I like the two components enough to keep multiple bottles on hand so I NEVER am without them, and I find the 1:1 blend interesting enough and different enough from its parents that I went to Container Store and bought a hand-blown, air-tight-capped small [edit - about 450 ml] bottle to hold it (thus returning the salad dressing carafe to its intended use). I now keep all three handy.

This is how I prefer to drink both; as Ken Mays says, it's a real synergy. The complexity is greater than that of its parts, and for the price of either, it's very hard to beat.

The BOTM and VOTM forums are two completely different and separate entities. I'm personally responsible for the BOTM forum. The VOTM thread was started by a site member. To be totally honest, I'm not sure who takes care of it.

Also, and FWIW, there is a separate forum/thread for members to post about any system issues. The general forums aren't the proper place. The staff is aware of the problems occurring in the BOTM forum, and we're looking into it. Many thanks to those of you who notified us through the appropriate channels.

Has the VOTM died?  Also, has anyone done any vattings with EC12?  I've got about 1/4 bottle left that I have neglected and it seems like a good vatting candidate.

I have a smaller amount of EC 12 left and a couple other bottles that are low as well.. Specifically bookers, OGD BiB, Ritt BiB, and Son of Bourye. Not sure which it might go with as I have only attempted vatting one other time.  (SAOS 7 and Baby Saz in a glass, equal parts. I thought it was good)

Fozzy was our most enthusiastic vatter but he's been absent for a while. As I recall, he was abstaining for a while so he could lose some more weight. Perhaps he'll return soon to carry the vatting torch once again.

Speaking of EC12 vattings. I love to blend EC12 with some ECBP. Like 3-4 Teaspoons of ECBP in a pour of EC12. It really lifts up EC12 another notch or two.

That was not actually why I quit posting/lurking but I did manage to drop another 10 or 15 pounds while still drinking regularly this past summer/fall.  I have been lurking again but haven't been vatting much at all other than some JBBIB and EWBIB I did the other day for bottle consolidation reasons.  Someone else started those VOTM threads and I have no interest in taking helm of the VOTM duties as I am trying to reduce the amount of time I spend on this and other non work related forums.

I loved my EC12:Larceny blends I used to make.

Fozzy:  Larceny not generally available in my neck of the woods.   I substituted Makers 46 for Larceny in the vatting with great results.  Give it a whirl.  EV

I had to go out of state to get my Larceny.  I have a MM46 750 and a Larceny handle both open, but my only bottle of EC12 is in the bunker.  I do have an ECBP 139.x open but that is too damn good to mix with anything else IMO.

Agree on the ECBP, but I am tempted to vat ECBP and MMCS. Don't have an ECBP open, but the next time I do...

EC 12 has shown up again around here, but since I am not a real fan of the "older" bourbons, I usually pass.  I think I have ONE bottle hidden someplace around the house.  If you guys come up with a vatting ratio that you like that involves EC12, please post - I'll gladly pull out mine for testing.B)

Harry: my starting point was a 50/50 blend.  I like it a lot. Sweetness from the MM46 complements the oakier character of the EC12. I like em on the sweet side, so next blend will be 60/40 MM46/EC 12.  EV
