The Dickel "vitamin note" really is a thing

My previous bottle of GD black was a few years old, and the last time I tried to sip from it, all I could taste was corn. I ended up lubricating the garbage disposal with the rest of that bottle.

Yesterday I picked up a bottle of GD No. 12 and was surprised that the "Flintstones vitamin note" was very prevalent on the nose and on the tongue. It makes for an interesting pour, and an inexpensive one too. I also like the Dickel rye since it tastes virtually identical to Bulliet rye (to me, at least) and is usually a few dollars cheaper.

It's definitely a thing and I can't stand it. I have a Dickel Barrel Select that I took one pour of about 2 years ago and haven't touched it since.

It seems people either love it or hate it.

I have a theory about the 'vitamin' note in GD....

I think if one must have a particular genetic make-up to even get much of that on the palate; and a further particular genetic make-up that will allow a person to 'like' it.

I have the first one; but NOT the second one.

If you're talking Flintstones vitamins and not something like one a days, I may have to give this a try. I remember really liking Flintstones vitamins as a kid

I've always been a big fan of GD#12. It does have a "different" thing going on, but I never thought it was a vitamin note... at least not any I've ever had...lol.

Some of you have much higher standards than I do. There is always something I can do with a bottle that disappoints--a rare event in this house anyway. Neighbor Dan will gladly drink what ever I pour him. At this time of year, it could go into jam cake. I have poured out wine that went bad. Never whisk(e)y of any kind.

If it makes you feel better, it only amounted to about maybe 1/2 a bottle, and I needed the shelf space.

I have a theory. I think its yeast we're tasting (those of us who taste the vitamin note anyway). I perceive the taste as almost identical to a B vitamin supplement that I used to take, and those tend to be made from yeast.

I wonder if its something in their distillation process that makes a difference or it they just have a particularly flavorful/aromatic yeast strain. To me its almost an identical scent to brewers yeast.

I'm pretty sure it's the yeast.

That's my guess too! Unfortunately, I am one of those who doesn't enjoy this whiskey. Just not in my wheel house. I bought a bottle once and took a bottle to a party. Others enjoyed it. Most had not even heard of it. So, it all worked out well!

I'll admit to being a Dickel enjoyer, though it does somewhat give me a headache the next morning.

The Barrel Select is Certified Yummy by me. I can't tell what you mean at all by "vitamin" in this context.

Maybe it's the vitamins that taste like bourbon, and not the other way around. How do you figure they ever convinced a bunch of guys to take vitamins in the first place?

Bourbon flavored vitamins. Is the wave of the future.

OOOOH, I'll take 'em every day, if they make 'em gluten-free.

The bottle of GD #12 I had definitely had the chewable vitamin thing going on. At first I found it repulsive, but by the end of the bottle I was enjoying it. It's definitely a unique flavor.

How do you feel about asparagus?

We just received a 9YO 103 proof Single Barrel of GD. Maybe it's my palate but I don't get a flintstone vitamin taste at all.

As a big fan of that vitaminy Dickel house style, damn if this thread didn't get me looking for my bottle, only to find I was out. Operative word here is "was". Quickly remedied. After a couple of weeks of monstrous bourbon expenditures, my self imposed spending moratorium was broken after 4 days...:D.

Yeast influence is as good a reason as any for the vitamin house style. Or, maybe the water ? Anybody ever take a sip of the water in that creek that runs out front? I believe that is from the source of the water Dickel uses in their processes. Any vitamin mineraliness to it?

I totally get it. I just poured a glass of the #8 recipe and nosed the glass and got that vitamin smell. I'm not complaining I like it but probably not enough to buy another bottle anytime soon.

It's exactly the yeast. When I was a child, my mother insisted on feeding us brewers yeast tablets for B vitamins. They tasted just like the "vitamins" taste people notice in Dickel.

EXACTLY!!!! Same Thing as the Dickel. Gotta have the gene to smell or taste either. ...Or to like or hate either (I guess)???

The interesting thing about this, is that I don't get any of the vitamin note in the Dickel Corn Whiskey, and I believe it is the same Mashbill as Dickel TN Whiskey.

I agree. Nothing in the corn whiskey which is the same recipe. It must be the interaction of the yeast with the barrel that gives it that distinctive taste
