Four in the recycling bin which gets emptied once a week. Further than that I am not sure. After all, there are several rooms on each of several levels of my house, and I haven't taken inventory lately. And that doesn't count the trunk of my car because I don't have any open bottles back there.

More than I can count.

Only 2 scotches though. (Not a big fan). 3 Irish.

9-10 ryes.

Countless bourbons.

I probably have 10-12 open bottles of Bourbon. Some I plow through in a week, and others linger for months. The lingerers are usually either the ones I don't like or the ones I like too much and have to savor until I find another one to replace it.

Probably about 60 open bottles of whiskey. About 40 bourbons and Tennessee whiskey, 10 ryes, and 10 scotches. If I buy a new bottle that I don't have one open already, I open the new bottle. It's a sunk cost at that point, and it's not doing me any good in my basement. Some nights I'm in the mood for EC12, or ETL, or FRPS, or SAOS, or Baby Saz, etc., so they may as well be open. YMMV.

I don't have any more than 10 bottles open . . . of the different Four Roses recipes. Would have to count, but I'm guessing about 70 in total, the majority bourbon, but some scotch, Irish, rye, etc.

Howdy!

Obviously I'm an outlier here. While I have 60+ bottles, only one is open at a time. Right now it is Henry McKenna. Next up is Alberta Springs.

2) Bourbons

1) Malt

1) Rye

1) White Dog

1) Whiskey

i was told at Heaven Hill during a short presentation about their products that bourbon once open has a shelf life of about one year because of oxygen getting into the bottle do any of you ever worry about spoilage?

This is an interesting question. I think even more interesting is, what percentage of your whiskey inventory is open? Here's my stats (not counting minis):

Bourbon: 42 bottles, 36 open

Rye: 19 bottles, 15 open

Other American: 14 bottles, 13 open

Canadian: 5 bottles, 4 open

Irish: 5 bottles, 4 open

Scotch Malt: 36 bottles, 24 open

Scotch Grain: 1 bottle, 1 open

Blended Scotch: 5 bottles, 4 open

Total: 126 bottles, 101 open (80% open)

That number is skewed because years ago I loaded up on a few Scotch single malts that I knew I'd never be able to find again. Except for those, I don't have more than one spare bottle of any particular whiskey. I'm a taster: I like to try lots of different whiskeys, but I don't have a deep bunker at all.

I think there have been more than one thread discussing this topic over the years if you do a little digging, Sluggo. Some go further into the chemistry than I care to understand. I think pretty much everyone agrees oxidation has an effect, but it takes some time. Don't mean to speak for anyone but myself, but I get the sense in general most people aren't terribly worried about it. Once a bottle gets down to 1/3 or 1/4 full, many will either make a determined effort to kill it off or else switch the contents to a smaller bottle. Some use that, what is it, CO2 spray? Beyond that, most don't get too wound up about it. And like any topic discussed on these boards, you'll find some who care deeply about it.

I forgot about Irish whiskey, so I'd add about 10 bottles of Irish whiskey to my approximate totals above (about 40 bourbons, 10 scotches and 10 ryes). Variety is the spice of life...

I try to keep only a handful of bottles open at a time... and sometimes am able to achieve that goal. At the moment, I have 5 bourbons, 4 ryes, 3 scotches, and 1 Irish whisky. I have a few brandies open at the moment as well.

Once I get much more than this open I usually try and focus on finishing off a few before opening any up. Although I just realized I don't have anything by Wild Turkey open and with Thanksigiving coming up that seems wrong somehow.
