How many open bottles do you have?

I have quite a few bottles open...probably 60 or so bourbon, 10 or so rye, and 8-12 bottles of Scotch/Irish. I am not counting other liquors that I have for mixing purposes or my small aged rum collection. The reason the number is so high for bourbons is that I am drinking down the inventory during my year or so of "splurge" when I was new to bourbon and would buy something new every couple weeks. Now that I've tasted a lot and have established my preferences, I'd like to be at <30 bourbons and maintain the rye and Scotch/Irish amount. I like variety too much to reduce the bottle count beyond that.

FWIW, I've only noticed oxidation negatively affect 2 or 3 bottles. Even then, the impact was small. I do try to keep them out of direct sunlight though.

Currently:

87 Bourbons

14 Ryes

18 other American

10 Scotch, Irish etc.

12 tequilas

5 Rums

5 Gins

7 Vodkas

20+ misc other

so 178+ and that is down about 20% from my high.

I have a neurotic need to taste every new bottle I get for which am getting therapy.

I'm actually trying to reduce the number so I have my "Another one bites the dust" reports on FB at night.

And, in all honesty, there are a few that are unrepeatable and I hate to see them all gone (forever).

I agree. I have several bottles that have been open for 5+ years and I enjoy them as much now as ever.

27 Open bottles (not including samples of course). Swore to my understanding and loving wife that I wouldn't open any more until I finish off a few to make more room.

I could have written this post. Except for the part about therapy...

I lost track of the total open bottles a long time ago but I suspect at this point, for better or for worse, the total is well past 178! And still growing rather than being reduced...

I like to keep a rounded variety. What's currently open:

Ceder Ridge Single Malt Whiskey - I just got this, it's from Iowa and tastes like a good Speysider.

Elmer T Lee - unabashed, unadorned, Kentucky bourbon

Old Pulteney Navigator - NAS, but fruity and seaside at the same time. Superb.

Laphroaig 10 - I don't drink the ashtray stuff all that often, but this is the type specimen.

Masterson's 10 year rye - the only Canadian I've got open , and not really typical of the breed. It's a rye for bourbon lovers.

287 Single Malt Whiskey - another craft single malt, this one from New York, and distilled from a hoppy beer base.

Diplomatico Reserva - Venezuelan rum, sumptuous stuff

Wild Turkey Rare Breed - the best Kentucky bourbon is Wild Turkey, and the best Wild Turkey is Rare Breed.

Glengoyne 15 year- typical Speysider, well aged

Craigellachie 13 year - has that roast beefy vibe like a Mortlach.

Wasmund's Single Malt Whisky - Yes, I've been exploring American craft single malts lately. The variety of approaches and flavors is fascinating. This is one of those where they speed up the aging by adding smoked wood to the barrels.

The Irishman Founders Reserve - This is the only Irish I've got open. Very much like Bushmills or a lowland single malt.

Matusalem Solera 15 - I should have open a Barbados rum; this one, from Dominican, is close in style and would be appealing to any bourbon drinker.

El Dorado 12 - Demerara rum is in a class by itself, simply the world's finest (and you gotta dig the variety of archaic stills they use).

Tobormory 10 - THE most underated Island scotch, IMO. Briny, not smoky.

Glendronach 12 - sherried Speysider, the stand-in on my bar for Macallans

Balvenie 12 year single barrel - at the moment, my favorite scotch period. But I've only got two drams left in the bottle. :(

Straight Edge Bourbon - bourbon finished in high end cab barrels, and the best example of a finished bourbon I've ever tasted. Unbelievably balanced and good. My whiskey of the year

parafilm or other product to seal around the cork. there people that put it under nitrogen like some wine folks do.

Feeling like I need to open something else just to break the century mark - sitting at 99 open (not counting bottles from barrel/mingle experiments).

57 bourbon, 19 rye, 10 scotch, 5 Canadian, and 8 "other" (corn, Irish, wheat, Tennessee, etc). Definitely the height of open count for me, and trying to whittle the entire count down.

I just counted

11 Bourbon

2 Rye (both opened in the last 2 days).

I'm going to try to stick to one in, one out and not open another bottle until I finish one of these, but we'll see as I've got some SAOS7 and HW Bourye calling my name...

Probably around 40 open bottles. I keep trying to drink them down to a manageable level, but as soon as I kill off a few bottles I feel like i've earned the right to open a a couple new ones.
