I have long thought about this hypothetical situation. thats like picking your favorite child. I can't decide between WLW, GTS, Pappy 15, or Saz 18

I do a couple lotteries every year where you have to prioritize your choices when you enter.  For the BTAC: Sazerac 18, WLW, GTS, ER17, THH.  That more reflects the rarity of opportunity to purchase than any particular preference on my part.  I like them all quite well.  GTS would be higher if I didn't have a couple put away already.

For the Van Winkle lineup: Rye, 10/107 . . . and after that they aren't especially to my liking.  Still, now that I'm in corportate America, I'd take any of the 15+year ones to gift to clients.

For the combined one, I typically do VW family reserve Rye, Sazerac 18, WLW, GTS, ER17, THH, 10/107, and all the rest by age with the Lot B last.

For me personally, my first choice would be the WLW. Next would be the ORVW 10, followed by Lot B. I have to stay true to my Wellers/wheaters.:D

I'll take the WLW and the GTS over the pappy line. I got a open bottle of the 2014 pappy 15, don't get me wrong, it's good, but not as good as my bottle of WLW 2015 or my GTS 2013. Cheers!

It would be hard for me to do anything but the WLW.  Next would be PVW 20 and Lot B.

I'm intrigued by many of you picking old rip and lot b over the older van winkles. I've only tried lot b so I don't know.

Why is the 10 and 12 year preferential over the 15 and 20. I don't nderstwnd, maybe the 23 is too woody for some but still

I've had all of them.  I like the 10/107 better than the 12, 15, 20, and 23.  Outside of some specific whiskies, 5-10 years is where I like my bourbon.  Some people like it younger, some people like it older.

I like 4R, so I would probably choose one of their LESmB. Bur I've never had anything limited, so I can't make an informed choice.

On second thought, I love hwmwnd, so I would choose that. That is the only le I've tried.

I got the WLW, Saz 18, Lot B, ORVW and the VWFR Rye from 2015 so my pick would have been Pappy 20.

personally, I've done a tasting of the 12, 15 and 20 year at once and the 15 stood out to me so that's why I decided on that bottle.  A friend got a bottle of 10 in another lottery and let me buy it off him so I've been able to try that too and I wasn't too impressed by it.  the 23 year was just too pricey for me, I think it's $300 MSRP?

I'm actually waiting for a friend to come into town so I can open this bottle of 15 and compare with the 10 and also a store pick of OWA since they're all 107 proof to see what we like best and see if it does live up to the hype.

I certainly can't fault your logic.  That tasting with your buddy sounds like an awesome time, too.  Depending on if someone actually got to pick the OWA or if it was just a BT private barrel deal, those can punch pretty far above their weight class.

You have chosen wisely.

Heck, who am I kidding, never seen a bottle of Pappy's in my life. Good for you!

I've tried Pappy 15, Van Winkle 12, GTS, WLW, Handy, 4RSiB LE 2014, Booker's 25th,  and a fantastic Parker's Heritage (can't remember the release now).

If I'm buying it just to drink, I'd take Stagg. But I'd probably choose the VW Rye or the Saz 18 for the rarity.

Or Pappy 15/20 to give as gift.

Hmmmmm.    What does "rarity" taste like?     ...Or, is that a sensory term used for some sort of aroma?

If I may be so bold,  how much did you pay for the 15?

MSRP at $89 and then they gave us a $10 off coupon for the event and they let me use that.  and that's why the store is awesome.

No, I wasn't referring to taste. It means it might be the only chance to get one of those bottles, so choose it while you have the chance. Make sense to you?

Maybe.    If it taste, smells, or at least loox good.   HA!

For me rarity just means hard to get get, which doesn't improve it's flavor, aroma or color.

My main satisfaction with this hobby is the physical pleasures I derive from looking at a glass of fine-colored Bourbon, smelling it as it evolves in that glass, tasting (and smelling) it as I wash it around in my mouth, and finally tasting and smelling the 'finish' after I swallow, as it (hopefully slowly) fades away.    I do understand 'collecting', and the satisfaction of obtaining something hard to get.    All that is a distant second for me, however.     In fact, of late, the pursuit of the really rare limited edition unicorns has become a pain in the ass.     I'd rather sit home and enjoy a pour of something more readily available that I enjoy, and can replace when needed.    Two ways among many to look at the hobby.   No wrong way exists.

Relax. Pretty sure it hasn't reached your market yet. It was officially released at the distillery gift shop just a little more than a week ago. It didn't hit distribution in Kentucky until late this week. It will be rolling out across the country in the coming weeks.
