My dad likes to worry. He got somewhat upset to see me drinking whisky over the holiday. He warned me off it and told me alcoholism runs in our family. I said I was probably fine since I was adopted. It was real weird because he's never said anything in the last 20 years when I've been drinking god knows what. For some reason whisky is different for him.

Anyone ever give you crap about drinking whisky?

My mom worries about me because my uncle was an alcoholic (he died from it) and whiskey was his drink of choice. (Need to note he was not a blood uncle). I think our parent's generation generally views whiskey a bit skeptically because in their time, whiskey was a hard core and unrefined drink choice with a bad reputation.

Most people don’t realize that 1 bottle of beer or a full glass of wine is equivalent in

alcohol content to 1oz of 100 proof whisky. So if you have a 2 finger glass full of whisky

(2 oz.) at a party and sip and enjoy it for an hour with some water on the side, you will be

more sober than the family members who drank 4 beers or 4 glasses of wine in that hour.

– 4 beers in an hour are easy to drink : )

But If you do 4 quick “shots” of any distilled liquor and also wash it down with 4 beers in

that same hour – or mix whisky with anything other than water ….

Well then all bets are off and you will soon be dancing on the kitchen table with your 20

something niece who loves doing shots of tequila on an empty stomach and you both

will end up embarrassing your family like the dead alcoholic relatives did in the past

who probably guzzled the whisky too.

The booze is guaranteed by the government to work, you just need to work it right.

I've got a couple uncles who were/are alcoholics and my grand dad, so it's not a fun subject. That said, I haven't been drunk since college and when I drink now, I rarely have more than a couple.

Now, if my family saw my modest bunker, that would be a whole different issue. The idea of a backup bottle is not something they would understand.

My wife and mom have always worried about me.  I've been a big drinker since high school.  But I'm very functional, even while I'm actively drinking.  I don't do moderation well in anything, really, so why should whiskey be any different?

Growing up I lived in a dry house. No alcohol allowed. My Mom used to say if you had to have even one drink a year you were an alcoholic. If my Mom & Dad could see my inventory now they would be horrified.

I took this different.  I took it as when you bring over a bottle, everyone comments.   For Thanksgiving I am always expected to bring a bottle and everyone rates what I bring.  My cousins are all big bourbon drinkers.

In this take...oh yes. My wife's family always expect me to bring Pappy to mix with Coke. Get mad if I don't. So, as I have mentioned many times, I fill an old Pappy bottle with OWA and they are happy. I know it is deceitful....but to mix with Coke...a victimless crime I guess.

HAHAHA! I love that! When I was a kid, I used to do this for my grandfather from time to time. He had a good friend who insisted on "the good stuff" and then proceeded to mix it with any manner of things. My grand dad used to buy cheap 1.75L of stuff (it was some kind of scotch) and have me pour it into a nicer bottle (Macallan, if I remember correctly).

I guess I have it good.  They are all bourbon drinkers.  If I bring something good, (good of course subjective) they seem to appreciate it.

Not judgmental about the drinking, but maybe a bit to the extent that I enjoy the whiskey itself and have a modest cabinet.

My dad has always been a drinker, probably more than he should at times in the past, but doesn't like the taste of it at all. He's a half pint of crown sipped on with a chaser kind of guy whenever he's having one. I had a nice pour of SAOSR in the glass to celebrate my sons birthday earlier this year and that combined with him seeing my collection of just a few dozen bottles was "damn, you really like this stuff?"

Grandparents on my wife's side of the family don't like alcohol.  I believe the grandmother's father was a bad alcoholic.  I go by one simple rule.  My house, my rules, your house, your rules.  I have no problem respecting their wishes in their house.  Made it clear that when they come up here that I don't want to hear a peep about it.

My mother (non-drinker), who has told me on numerous occasions that she no longer has a sense of smell, is offended by the aroma of my bourbon - even outside, from several feet away in a healthy breeze.  Claims she gets drunk from the fumes.  May start asking her to pony up some cash.

That's good, you don't have to worry about him drinking it all.

I never drink in front of those who would judge me. It's difficult having a passion and hobby about something that people see as taboo such as alcohol. I've hid my collection from one family member what would overreact if she ever found out. What would be a smart way to tell a fearful someone you collect and enjoy whiskey?

Mom was a bit concerned, because dad had a problem. But the solution has been having her over for a few visits where she spends ~10 days 24/7 with me, and she has seen how and when I drink, as well as how and when I do NOT drink. Frankly, she partied harder than I do in her day (good for her!) :)

The only things in life I've ever allowed myself to be addicted to are the internet, video games, and collecting things. And even there, it's on and off and I can cold turkey whenever I decide I don't like what's going on. I just don't have the addictive personality.

Which is good, because every 10 weeks I go offshore for work and it's zero alcohol, zero excuses for 5wks at a time. We just had a guy fired on the spot the other day for failing a breathalizer test coming on board. You pretty much have to be drinking in the morning for this to happen, so yeah, that's problem level (provided you're on your way to an industrial workplace - I know some of you retired guys enjoy a drink in the morning, and cheers to you!)

Sebastian, I always say to people who might be concerned "I'm extremely fussy about what goes in my glass, that's why I have this here collection. I'm even fussy about the glassware. Let me tell you two things about alcoholics - Firstly, they ain't fussy. Secondly, they can't keep an inventory. When you see NO bottles left on my shelves and me drinking $12 vodka, THEN you can worry."

Well said TBT. Haven't seen you in a while, good to see you posting again.

Good to be back, Steve. Just spent a big vacation away from the computer - road tripped France and Northern Spain, and basically worked on my living space a lot. Back offshore for the next 5 weeks so expect a LOT of posts from a captive contributor, lol.
