I'm all set to buy a 750ml Weller Special Reserve but I saw a review that describes the taste as "not smooth" and "having a bite."  These are traits I don't want. Comments welcomed. Thanks,

Sam

I was not a fan of the bottle I had.  In fairness, it was and still is the only Weller product I have tried.  I definitely wouldn't buy another bottle for $20...maybe $10.  It did have a bite and the flavor seemed off in some way to me.  Larceny is much better imo.

Weller Special Reserve is not particularly highly regarded around here.  It is 90 proof and NAS.  Most of us, me included, prefer Old Weller Antique, which is NAS but 107 proof (used to be 7 years old), and Weller 12, which is obviously 12 years old and 90 proof.  And then there is obviously the blend of those two.  There is just not much use for me of the NAS watered down WSR.

Sam - while it does have a bit of a bite, I enjoy Weller SR as an occasional, low priced sip.  It sells for 12.99 around here.  If you can get it fairly inexpensively, I'd give it a shot and see what YOU think - as all of us have different preferences and taste buds!

Good to know.  Thanks, Golzee.

Weller SR isn't highly regarded on SB, but in my opinion in the $12.99-$14.99 range is one of the best values out there.  It's often available in 200ml and 375ml bottles.  You might want to pick one of those up to try it and post your own opinion.

IMHO you'll be disappointed if looking at WSR as a neat pour.  It has value as a mixer, in cooking... but for sipping neat look to Larceny, OWA, W12. It is tremendously instructive and fun in a SBS with W12 as it shows the same juice at the same proof with additional age and the absence of rye so rye spiciness doesn't get confused with the youthful heat/bite of too young whiskey.
