How often do you drink and how much?

Dear Mrs. Hungry Hobbit:  First, no need to keep apologizing.  The question is reasonable, and the topic is not unworthy of consideration.  Second, on to the drinking part which is more fun, I don't know how far you are along on this journey, but I will add that my wife really enjoys Angel's Envy.  I think it is likely the marriage (no pun intended) between the bourbon and port finishing.  Once again, good luck.

Excellent video!  Very educational...a joy to watch.  Thank you for posting that.

I feel so much better knowing that we're on the right path.  Besides an espresso every morning hubby only drinks water and an occasional Sprite.

Now I can focus on helping him build a collection.  :D

Hungry Hobbit - glad you watched that video - Ralfy is a great reviewer as well - he has about 500 videos online.

Cheers:D

Good observation, Fly.  My wife likes bourbon but chooses not to drink it regularly - prefers a short wine with dinner and saves up her alcohol consumption for that.  BUT, whenever I pour a neat ounce or two, she ALWAYS asks for a sniff.

You might take a tip from Ralfy and get your husband a Glencairn glass for tasting. Even if you are just nosing, not drinking, you might enjoy sharing the experience with your husband. Women tend to have more sensitive palates than men. He could benefit from having you help identify some of the subtle aromas associated with really fine bourbon.

Done and done!  The glasses are so so so cute too.  I bought 8 in case we break some or if he wants to invite friends over.  It is true that I have a very strong sense of smell.  A blessing and a curse really.  So I am looking forward to sniffing as well.  I'm also going to get a Ravenscroft Lead-free Decanter in case he wants to experiment mixing some.

So the plan is I will serve him drinks blind and see if he can learn and detect the different notes.  Then while he sips I'll read him all about the history and fun facts, etc. It will be a fun and relaxing hobby for the both of us.

Thank you for the suggestion!

Oh bummer I just turned down the Angel's Envy Cask Strength!  I wasn't sure at $180 it was worth it. Based on previous years' reviews folks didn't seem very taken with it.

I'm a sucker for accent, so the second I heard Ralfy spoke I was all ear.  I like how authentic and sincere he seemed so I'm planning on watch more of his videos.

Mahalo!

I was referring to the standard Angel's Envy, which should run about $40-$50 per bottle.  Angel's Envy Cask Strength is a different story, and obviously requires a much bigger financial outlay, with to be frank, mixed reviews.  Standard Angel's Envy isn't universally loved either, but it is a pretty good bourbon if you like the finishing.

I don't worry about how much I drink.  If I want I drink...  I pour one.  If I want another...  Well...  Enjoy your life. Live it the way you sit fit.  Cheers!

The Whisky Bitch is also a great reviewer. She may not have the accent but she is equally as charming and covers a lot more American whiskys than Ralfy.

You know , I don't want to sound like a downer, here...but...Ralfy, as entertaining as he is on his Scotch reviews, is worthless on Bourbon, IMO.  I went through a couple of his reviews, and quickly tired of his mistakes.  Whiskeybitch...is just plain worthless, in general.

[Harry, I say to myself, keep them fingers off Joe's post even if you agree with him.  Remember in 'Bambi' what Thumper said his Mom said: "If you can't say nothin' nice, . . .]

'Way back when this thread started, I was coming off a marathon clean-the-attic-to-find-all-the-decorations downer and misread the original post.  I thought HH has said her new-to-bourbon spouse had gone from a beer hobby to a bourbon hobby and from 1 to 2 ounces a DAY to 2 to 4 ounces a DAY instead of just on the weekend.  Not wanting to be an enabler (as persons close to me who are no longer extant were enablers and enablees), I declined to respond.

That said and keeping in mind that every person's situation is different, he consumes less than I do by a factor of some number.  ALSO, I wouldn't be surprised that, after he spends some time (I'm thinking months although I've been drinking legally for 50+ years so MMMV) trying things out, he'll settle into a routine that actually results in LESS ABV being consumed over a week or so although the sessions may last longer as he savors.

It's why my beers tend to be low alcohol (the "session" beers).  I like to taste them without forgetting what I'm tasting.

But that's me.

Love Ralfy. He knows his Scotch, but I have to agree with you on the Bourbon (and other drinks). I'm no Bourbon expert but even I cringe watching some of his American whiskey reviews.

As for the WB ... difficult to watch ... not my cuppa

As for the subject of this topic, chances are if you are concerned with how much is too much, you are probably not drinking too much. People with drinking problem don't spend time reading/writing about alcohol, they are too busy drinking it!

I'm not a huge fan of any bourbon reviews that I've seen. Liquor hound wasn't bad the first review or two I saw. Don't really like j Pyle. The charred barrel society is interestingand well produced, but I can't take that sort of vibe they put out.

I personally like the YouTube reviewers Ralfy, Whiskey Bitch, LiquorHound and WhiskeyBlooded - all very entertaining and informative to me.  I frankly can't get enough of online bourbon reviews, and try to watch as many as I can.  Granted, their tastes are not always my tastes, but I have found, more often than not, their reviews to be very helpful in my education of what to look for in good bourbon, and how to avoid costly purchases of less-than-palatable bottles!

I'm with you Joe.   Honestly haven't found many Youtube reviewers I can stand to watch.   When i want reviews, I look to the REAL experts....SBers!  There are certain SBers that I've found over time seem to have the same general "palate" for bourbon that I do.  When they give their opinion on a bourbon I take notice.
