Stagg Jr. (recent batches) is outstanding stuff, generally available, and well priced at around $50. Good call on stocking up. And another great job there on the Japanese whiskys. I would call you crazy, but I too just recently built a Japanese collection from scratch, focusing on the age statements that were going away. I "settled" on the Yamazaki 12, Hibiki 12, and Taketsuru 12. None of the older, more expensive stuff, but the three expressions I picked up are very nice core offerings. You didn't settled. Japanese Whiskey are exquisite in their own right. Although they are getting harder and harder to find and the price can get pretty ridiculous. Anyway, he tried 4 already and ranked them as such. 1. Yamazaki 12 2. Hakushu 12 3. Nikka Taketsuru 12 4. Hibiki
Harry in WashDC
Visited earlier and was wowed by the selection, HH. All I got was a pair of winter socks. Yeah, was a cheap shot; in truth, she allows me to buy what I want. Won't let me store the extras in the trunk of HER car, though. Bummer.

Harry tell her it's quite fun researching and purchasing whiskey! I am quite fond of this new hobby already. I love serving a dram or two to hubby on the weekend. He drinks while I share a sniff which I enjoy tremendously. While he drinks we read up on the history and notes of those particular whiskey. It can be very interesting and educational. A pretty impressive collection of Japanese whisky as many of the age stated bottles are getting increasingly difficult to find and commensurately more expensive. Don't know that I have even seen a Hibiki 21 on the shelf before and the Yamazaki 18 is one of my favorite Japanese whiskies of all time but has more than doubled in price in the last few years. The Yoichi 15 and Miyagikyo 12 are interesting as they are the Nikka whisky from the two Nikka distilleries in the blend of malts that make up the Nikka Taketsura 17 (there was also a Taketsura 12 and 21 but I believe the 12 has now gone NAS as have the Yoichi and Miyagikyo) which in my opinion, and the opinion of many reviewers, is an excellent whisky. I think the Yamazaki 18 just edged it out for me but both are delightful. Edited December 29, 2015 by tanstaafl2
