I don't have a ton of room in my cabinet. Do you decant 1.75L into smaller bottles for everyday use? What do you do with the extra 250ml?

I was actually wondering this exact same thing.  I got a store select ER10 in a 1.75L, a HUGE bottle a couple months ago.  I was thinking of putting it into old ER bottles that I still had.  you could just split it into 3 different bottles and start drinking the 250ml first.

I have been in situations where the choice was 1.75L of something , or not at all (dusties), or a really great deal on a handle of something I like.  I saved some 375ml Eagle Rare bottles I picked up years ago from a store selection.  Those are great for decanting into.  I also have a number of 750mls that were just too cool to recycle ready to go.  Make sure you have a funnel.  You don't want to spill good whiskey.

Would there be any issues toppng off a half full 750 with a different 1.75L, then filling 2 empty bottles? I'm not sure how much you will miss of the nuance of the half full bottle for anything cheap enough to sell by the half gallon.

Keep my drinking bourbon in a family room cabinet. The bunker is in the basement. I decant handles into 750s just for convenience--and to avoid risk of spillage. AAAYO came in plastic handles so I decanted it into glass. That is a "problem" I no longer face.

Ultimately it is your whiskey so you can do as you feel best of course. I doubt that would hurt anything but I probably wouldn't bother. I think how the bottle is stored is a good bit more important than how much is left in a particular bottle.

I don't hesitate to buy a family size bottle, especially if they are on sale, but all the 1.75 bottles are too heavy and unwieldy for me to pour from.  Hard to handle as well, drop one on a tile floor it's call the maid and blame the dog.

For anything that will be consumed within a year or so I decant into whatever's available, plastic water bottles will do.

Unwieldliness, girth, and mass encouraged me to decant. The only time I bother to top off a partially occupied 750 with 1.75 contents is when I'm short of clean empties and need the floor space the 1.75 would take up (which isn't very often) AND what I'm mixing is pretty basic (VOB into VOB, for example).  I also live near a Container Store, and they sell these really nice 400 ml or so blown glass water bottles with good caps.  I keep some of those around for vatting or for dregs when I've been told my bottles are multiplying, and the herd better be thinned or else . . .

It depends on how ridiculous the bottle is. 1.75s of, say, ER10 or EC12, where it's unwieldy, get decanted. Bottles you can reasonably pour from, like WT101, I'm not so worried about.

Yes I do. Like I posted in another thread, I use empty ETL bottles because they fit on my shelf and in my cabinet better.

I would also add that, in the case of glass handles, they make excellent water jugs.  Always good to have water on hand in case of emergency, and larger glass bottles aren't as common these days.  I wouldn't want my emergency water stored in plastic (or any of my water, actually...) Plus, you get to recycle and feel a little bit better about the planet.

I have a 70's Yellowstone handle in my car with water in it.

Larceny and Buffalo Trace bourbons are always purchased in the family size, but always consumed from the 750ml.  Decanting on these two brands is SOP, here.

Or local store sells larceny for 19.99, with handles being 49.99. They went on sale for 17.10 recently. Handles at the same price. Hmmm...
