Josh
Scandal. I hate that show so much, but my wife loves it so I drink and post snarky things about it on Twitter whenever she watches.

b1gcountry
I just watched the first two episodes of Jessica Jones. It was interesting, although I keep staring at her lips. Which is honestly something I've never stared at before... it was interesting that "the cheapest thing you got" at the dive liquor store was wt101... Jacket
Honestly - I wouldn't be surprised if Justified is partly responsible for the Bourbon boom we're in the middle of. I loved that show, and every time someone would pour a bourbon, I would start salivating.

Harry in WashDC
On the "last" Doc Martin episode which aired tonight (Sunday 28 Feb 2016), titled 'The Doctor Is Out", Bert Large's secret for making weeks old whisky, in his tiny homemade still, that tastes like aged whisky is revealed: Spoiler alert -- "Wood chips" he tells his son, Al. Makes me want to seek out one of those "specials" Chuck has blogged about. Instead - Hello OGD BIB.

I watch this show when I notice it's on, but one question I always have: who buys that shine? The going rate of $100/gallon doesn't seem that great for the buyer (about $20 for a fifth I think), so why not just go to a liquor store to buy something better (for cheaper in many cases even)? Maybe I'm giving the buyers too much credit to think they can do that math?... Edit to add - or maybe it's the super high proof of the moonshine that appeals to buyers? I guess you can't really walk into a discount liquor store and buy 155 proof whiskey off the shelf. On the flipside, one of those moonshiners had a 1000 gallon seasonal goal and charged $200 per gallon (or maybe it was 2000 gallons at $100 per) - either way that's 200K a year in revenues. Obviously there are some expenses to bring that down, but that's still quite a nice summer of work! Edited March 2, 2016 by dcbt

I am assuming that most of the show is complete bullshit, with that being said, the prices may reflect the area they live. I mean that they may live in dry counties, so, the options may be to buy shine or drive some ungodly distance. When I was going to school at Western Illinois, it was a dry county on Sundays, which led us to stocking up on Saturdays. But, sometimes you run out and are stuck with less than desirable options, I remember paying a friend a premium on a case of beer just because I didn't want to drive the 30 miles to the county line. Slightly off thread but - according to Max Watman's "Chasing the White Dog: an Amateur Outlaw's Adventure in Moonshining" (2011), it's as much a cultural thing as a preference thing (but likely not a flavor thing). And re: high proof "whiskey", one can buy Everclear (made by Luxco) @ 151 proof as well as 190 proof in some states. But like you, I find it a lot easier to just visit a liquor store and grab whatever looks good. I did watch a half dozen episodes of Moonshiners but it never inspired me to partake. Hhhhmm. Sometimes just hearing the wind will move me.
