I feel the need to have two bottles of everything in my collection and six bottles of my favorites.

Is it just me?

I doubt it. Some prefer to have a "backup" of more difficult to find bottles and some stock several bottles of favorites.  I tend to only end up with a bottle or two of difficult to find bottles so I don't have the luxury of multiple bottles. Favorites can vary. However,  I typically don't stock more than 2 or 3 bottles of the same brand.

I've been fretting over the lack of VOB BIB NAS on my shelves and in my bunker and harassing a retail source for "When is it coming in???"  While doing laundry in the basement today, I found three bottles sitting on a shelf.  My rationalization: It's not enough if there's a revolution.  Just saying . . .

No, that's perfectly normal.

If you love it, there's no such thing as "too many bottles."  That's unfortunate for both your bank account and for your fellow bourbon lovers.

Not just you. I have many multiples of my favorites and those hard to find. Sometimes it's about stocking up when you see it (because you don't know when you'll see it again), and sometimes it's about hedging against future higher prices (which is a reality here in Washington State.)

If you can afford it, like it, and know it will get consumed, stock up I say...... I'm doing exactly that with Knob Creek, Makers Mark, Makers 46 and Blanton's whenever they are on special (which is not often here), or a friend is going overseas and offers to source me some duty free.  They're all my regular pours, so getting them cheaper is a bonus.

Things that are ALWAYS on my shelf:

1) George Dickel #8, mostly as a daily sipper, or when I just want something mellow and uncomplicated.

2) Elijah Craig. My go-to Lo-Rye.

3) Larceny. My go-to Wheater.

4) Henry McKenna Single Barrel. My "rowdy" Hi-Rye.

5) 1792 Ridgemont Reserve. My "sophisticated" Hi-Rye.

6) A Brandy. Right now it's Gran Duque D'Alba from Jerez, Spain.

7) A Medium-bodied Anejo Rum. Right now it is Brugal 1888 Gran Reserva from Dominican Republic.

8) A Full-bodied Anejo Rum. Right now it is Zaya 12-year.

9) My most recent addition, Haig Club Single Grain Scotch Whisky. This is what I offer friends who ask for Canadian or Irish, with favorable results thus far!

10) A Light-bodied Sherry-finished Single Malt. Tyrconnel 10-year Irish, when I can splurge. Tomatin 12-year Scotch when I'm on a budget.

11) A Full-bodied Sherry-finished Single Malt. Usually Aberlour 12-year.

12) For special occasions only-- Glenfarclas 25-year Single Malt.

I simply buy a new bottle when something gets down to less than a quarter full.

A few exceptions:

* I buy Old Grand Dad 114 in triplicate, since it never stays available in PA for long. Needless to say, I haven't had any on my shelf in YEARS...

* I occasionally add a Straight Rye to the shelf. The latest one was Wigle, from Pittsburgh. Very good for such a young whiskey, but could still use a little more maturity.

* During the Summer, I add a gin to the shelf. I like Bloom Gin on ice with a splash of Hubert's Lemonade.

So yeah, that's my liquor buying/stocking habit in a nutshell. I like variety, and I like having something to accommodate every mood... or everything in my humidor!

Whenever I rifle through my stash I'm always comforted to see that, "Oh yeah, I have another bottle of that!" Realistically, it will take me years to drink what I have sacked away and longer knowing that new things are always coming out that I want to try. It doesn't help (does help?) that my wife is such a talented enabler who finds things on sale/rebate that I should buy while it's cheap. There's nothing I regret buying and it's nice knowing that if I had to stop buying tomorrow, I have plenty of good stuff waiting in the wings.

I have three or four of each of my favorites, and two of everything else.

I guess I'm doomed to a life of poverty here in retirement.  But I know that I can always seek solace and tranquility within the warming walls of my bunker with my "little friends."

Is this why I woke up looking at two (2) bottles of ECBP #11 yesterday?????

I think many/most of us have "extras" of at least some of the ones we like.    As to how many extras?... I'm sure that varies according budget, as well as availability.

So, to sum up: You're not alone, Buddy.

Depends on where you live. I don't bother stocking up on bourbon that is readily available at a decent price. Think OGD. I do buy multiples of bourbons that I find at a much lower price when traveling. Think WT101 at under $30 a handle compared to $40+ at home. Mostly, though, I stock up on things that are simply unavailable at any price where I live. Think anything with Weller in its name.

I do have multiples of favorites, and I have rarely regretted stocking up on favorites.  The following will help explain my rationale.  Has EWSB gotten better recently (1-2 years younger than the bottles in my stash).  How's that Weller 12 and OWA availability doing (none around).  EC12 store select single barrels (how's that EC12 doing in general?).  HMcK BIB store select single barrels at $25, yes please.  RHF rarely around.  FRSB honey barrels and FRSB PS, never too much.  ETL store select single barrels at under $30, disappeared in general now.  ER10 and BT store select single barrels noticeably better in general than off-the-shelf.

That is a sampling of why I have multiples of many favorites.  Sure, it's not "necessary", and it does require an outlay of money and use of space, but as we are enthusiasts, I consider it a worthy endeavor.  YMMV.

We'll buy extras when hard to come by stuff is at a decent price (W12, OWA, ETL) and stock up on regularly available items that are on sale throughout the year (FRSiB, BT, Booker's).  Usually no more than three, but, FRSiB got up to 5 at one point.  Our basement stock has been decreasing over the past six months . . . just not buying much.

It's not just you, but the key for me has seemed to be "what" to go deep inventory on.

These days, I love CRNH. Great stuff, for about $26/bottle when you buy by the 12 case and pay cash. That price/performance ratio is really working for me. This bottle is certainly one of the "bubble busters" for me.

Next week I'll also be buying a case of Pikesville Rye. Late to the party, as usual, but all in, also as usual.

There are no current bourbons I'd buy by the case. Period. But I've got my eye on the market for exceptions.

Good things await us in rack houses. I've got lots of drinking to do while I wait for them to come of age.
