silverc
In my travels in Tennessee I've seen a bourbon called Old Forge, out of a distillery in Pigeon Forge, TN. It's age stated at 8 year, and I sure it sourced. The standard release is 89 proof and I have little interest in it, but there is also a cask strength version that I spotted at 131 proof for about $65. I almost bought it but decided to wait. Anybody tried this before? Is it good? Do you know where it is sourced from? I can't find any reviews of it online. I think it's quite new. Any help would be appreciated. Did you look at all possible labels to see if it says "Distilled in (state)" anywhere?
JoeTerp
By default I always assume MGP.
VAGentleman
Old Forge has only been around a couple years (decent moonshine) so definitely sourced. Never had it though (the bourbon) Edited June 22, 2016 by VAGentleman

Yes, and if it doesn't specifically state where it was distilled, it was distilled in the same state where it was bottled.

But I can't be sure since I didn't check the bottle carefully enough to see if it said where it was distilled. I e-mailed them to ask so hopefully I get some response. ken_mays
I looked pretty closely at this a couple weeks ago. Label says distilled in TN. Tasted it at the gift shop and it wasn't bad. A lot of corn flavor and heavy vanilla. It tasted a bit rough but in a pleasant way. I would have walked out with a bottle but didn't want to pay $65 for an 89 proof 8 year old. I didn't detect any of the Dickel vitamin flavor so I figured it may have been Brown Forman whiskey, but I have been told that BF doesn't often contract their whiskey out. If I'd seen the cask strength for $65 I probably would have bought it.
VAGentleman
Corsair seems to be doing a lot of contract distilling. Not sure if they have anything that old though
knoxdocs
Had a taste of the cask strength today. Not sure where it comes from, but it tastes pretty good to me. Any more info on this one?

I can't imagine a recent circumstance where B-F would have spare barrels of JD to sell off.
knoxdocs
Tastes like neither of those things, but at 130 proof with an 8 year age statement I don't have much to compare it too. Maybe a side by side with JDBP and dickel _____ (fill in the blank). Good idea bean!
Norbert
I visited the distillery a few days ago. Keener, the distiller, told me it was sourced from Dickel. They bought 300 barrels. In store they now have a 9yo (I bought me a bottle), soon they'll release the 10yo.
silverc
I agree with Knoxdocs. This is really good stuff. I want to do a side by side comparison of the 8 yr 131 proof Old Forge cask strength and the 9 year 132 proof Barrell Bourbon Batch 008. They both have very similar specs and are also both likely sourced from Dickel.
