Which liquor store has the best selection of bourbon in the Boston/Worcester area?

At least once a year Mrs PG and I visit my family back in Massachusetts where I grew up. I didn't learn to drink whiskey there but do enjoy having a taste or two with my father when I visit. I've visited Julio's on Rt 12 and Yankee Spirits in Sturbridge where they have good selections but nothing that I can't find here in the greater KC area.  They seem to be smitten with scotch in New England and expensive scotch at that.

So what's a bourbon drinker to do when visiting Massachusetts? It's not a bourbon snob sort of quest, just an effort to find an above average bottle to treat my father and myself when visiting. Dear old Dad is 92 YO and deserves a good bottle every visit for not throttling me during my misspent youth.

I've never been to Boston, but another choice is to bring a bottle with. It will probably be cheaper in KC than in taxachussets

I was in the Boston area a couple of years ago. I bought two bottles of ETL for $27.99 each, for a total of $55.98 with no tax. ^_^ Living in Illinois, no tax on liquor was a very pleasant surprise.

Julios tends to have very good store picks. So even though the name on the bottle might be something you can find at home, Julios version may be slightly different or better and is likely worth trying.

I avoid Julios on principle. Their prices are high relative to other area stores and their whole card system is a joke for selling allocated items at inflated prices.

There is Total Wine and Spirits in Natick you may want to check out

If you're in Boston proper:

-- Atlas Liquors in Medford has good prices and good selection

-- Sav-Mor Liquors in Somerville has good (often great) prices on basics, and occasionally some surprise top-shelfers

-- Federal Wine and Spirits in Government Center (right near the Old State House) has a great scotch selection, though they're weaker on Bourbon; they're the place to go if you're in a hotel in town and want to stay on the subway.  Excellent wine and spirits knowledge, medium prices, weekly wine tastings that can't be beat.

-- Martignetti's on Soldier's Field Road has a good selection, often has more of the special selection bottles

Julio's prices may be a bit high, but they do have a great whiskey selection, and I ignore their whole card thing.
