If Larceny is hot, then so is my mother in law

Then I want to see your mother in law. Joking aside, compared to other whiskey's of comparable cost, it is hot. I much prefer Eagle Rare, or Buffalo Trace. For that matter for seven dollars more, Woodford Reserve. Granted these are 80 proof and not 92, but then Knob Creek is 100 proof, and doesn't seem as hot.

With any brand or bottle it can be hit or miss, depending on the day.  The first time I tried Larceny I thought it unduly hot and yech and didn't have 2nd glass.  But a week later had a drink out of the same bottle and found it mellow and great!

Ok, so I, being stubborn, am trying another pour of Larceny. It is 92 proof. The nose on it is hot, and when you taste it the nose did not lie, it is hot . . .

Hhhhm.  Mayhap the disconnect amongst us is:

Some of us been legally drinking bourbon neat 40+ years.  Hence, when someone says a 92 proof wheated bourbon (even if it IS Larceny which is what we think is a new form of Old Fitzgerald and, thus, is actually pretty good its own self so people like me have multiple bottles in reserve), a few of us poke fun.  We mean no harm, but our tongues are so burnt we can't feel "heat" at 92 proof.  If you feel heat, then you feel heat, and don't let us tell you otherwise.  Rich has a good idea - pour some (about 2 oz.) in a glass and let it sit a few minutes.  Be sure you haven't eaten any strange food (Taco Bell, Buffalo Wings, sriracha sandwiches, etc.) which could screw up your palate (i.e., taste and smell buds).  Keep a room temperature glass of water close by to help ease the heat if necessary.  Sip a TEENY bit but don't swallow; roll it around in your mouth like some wine freak.  Wait a minute or so.  Take another TEENY sip and compare/contrast with the first.

Keep in mind that the goal isn't, "How high a proof of this really rare bourbon can I stand while taking a huge swig?"  The goal is, "Lemme taste this bourbon in my glass, regardless of price, and see if I like it."

And, yeah, I had one or two Knob Creeks neat tonight with and after dinner at a restaurant.  But, dang, you mentioned Larceny, and now I really crave an ounce or so.

I find KC much "hotter" than larceny.

None of those others you mentioned are 80 proof, you know?  BT and ER10 are 90, and I think WR is 90.4.  Or am I confused as to what you're referring to?  (I guess that furthers your preference for them as comps, though!)

I found the second glass, on the rocks much better, and the third was mixed with vernors, which was pretty good. I think I will try another one tonight on the rocks.

However you like it. I have a couple that burn my tongue even though folks here love them.

I say you should drink it anyway you find enjoyable.  If that is on the rocks or with soda, that is fine.  It is for your enjoyment!  I really like Larceny.  I think I know the experience you are talking about with respect to "hot."  I am not certain it as much hot but a little more alcohol "hit" or "burn" which overpowers the flavor slightly.  I experience this on occasion not only with Larceny but other bourbons as well.  I equate this to a palate issue rather than inconsistency issues with the bourbon.  I think Rich hit it on the head with his suggestion to give it a little air time to see if that helps.  If not, maybe your palate will be slightly different the next time you try it.  If you get to the end of the bottle and still didn't enjoy it, then give it a break and try it again later in your bourbon journey just to confirm whether it is in your wheelhouse.  Sometimes the most popular bourbons just aren't for everyone.  It doesn't matter as long you can identify the ones you enjoy.

  • 3 weeks later...

I prefer Larceny on the rocks (it helps that it's easily available in Massachusetts), and when the weather cools off enough for me to really slow down my urge to drink whiskey on ice, I'll switch to something else.

Old Harry got this about as right as you can get. I do have a TEENY quibble. In our house we follow Jessica's Rule: You do have to take a sip that is big enough to actually taste it and roll it around. A critical mass as it were. It has to be TEENY but not TOO TEENY. With 40+ years practice, you may close to mastering this, Grasshopper.

I believe the official terminology for TOO TEENY is TEENY WEENY!

Always important to use the correct terminology... :P

As we're being all official and stuff, it would be lax of us to not remind folks that  ITSY BITSY is the next step up in size...:)

Or, is that smaller....????

Um, by "TEENY", I meant no more than 2 ounces at a swallow.  Just to be clear.B)

Very similar in size. I think TEENY WEENY is metric and ITSY BITSY is not!

Indeed. I believe that 2.54 TEENY WEENIES = 1 ITSY.

I can see where this is going. Soon, the debate over how many buttloads are really contained in a metric f*ckload will rage.

Hey, Boss.  Just what IS a buttload nowadays?

And now - BACKTOTHETHREAD -

I may have to break out a new Larceny now that the temp has dropped a bit.  We're getting into that time of year when I have to keep wheateds AND rye-forward bourbon AND ryes on hand to match the evening temp.  Ah, the troubles we all face.
