Hundreds of dollars won't insure he will like it anymore than Blantons.  The same amount spent on a half dozen bottles of Blantons is something you know he will like.

A nice approach, this.  HH 6yrBIB is hard to find here.  I have relatives who give me a bottle or two EVERY Christmas.  I am more appreciative of that HH 6yr BIB than if they gave me something "special" that I'd be reluctant to drink by myself.

Agree with squire and Harry and Joe a few posts up. Go to one of the overseas purveyors and look for Blanton's Straight From the Barrel. It comes and goes because it's in demand so if it isn't there, get Blanton's Gold which is 103 proof I think. I hear that most people who try Blanton's Gold like it better than standard Blanton's.

Yeah but isn't that boring as a gift. It's obvious the OP wants to give a special gift that he doesn't buy for himself.

Some good advice here.  My 2 cents:

- EHT Barrel Proof (but $175 is crazy, it should be half that), Rock Hill Farms, or Elmer T. Lee are all good recommendations.  He should enjoy all of those and none are seen everyday so should be a special treat and would make nice gifts.

- Blanton't SFTB or Gold from overseas if you really want to splurge and don't mind paying a lot extra for it.

Gold from overseas will run about $100 with shipping. Not as bad as you think and a better price than the marked up bourbons mentioned above.

You can try calling the Buffalo Trace gift shop and ask them if they have any unique Blanton's merchandise.  They greatly expanded the gift shop within the last year or two so they may have some interesting items.

And this is a longshot but contact some of the better bottle shops near your friend and ask them if they are looking to acquire their own Blanton's single barrel in the future.  If you are fortunate enough to find one, you may be able to hook your friend up with helping the shop select the barrel.

I'm not sure if these guys ship to the states, but they sell Blanton's Gold and Straight from the Barrel.  They also sell port, Islay, and rum cask finished Heaven Hill bourbons, which are pretty darn unique.

If the OP was in the DC area, I could probably make something happen as far as unique and interesting bourbons go, but I got nothing for the Carolinas.

I would be excited if someone gave me a half case of prime whisky but I'm not easily bored.

Good God, I sure HOPE not.  Some of us are destined to wander in the wilderness.  Without hearing the voices of others, we might feel we were wandering alone.

Thank you all so much.  I've learned a lot from you all and doing my own research.  I found a bottle of Rock Hill Farms for around $50 and still going to try to keep my eyes open for some of the harder to find recommendations you've made.  I have a friend going on a cruise and have her on the look out for the Blantons for me, asked her to grab it if she finds it....but at least I found the RHF.  Is it really as hard to find as I'm being told?  I've seen it going for $145-$200.

It is on the shelves in the stores I shop in from time to time but seems to disappear within hours after display - except in one store where just about everything potable seems to be twice MSRP or more which is about what you'd expect in the high-end hotel area.

Rock Hill Farms is great and a fine choice that is somewhat hard to find.  It's on shelves sporadically for $40 - 80 around here but sells on secondary at about $75 right now.

Another option is to buy an international Blanton's that you can't get int the states like Blanton's Gold or Straight From the Barrel.  Both are available from Masterofmalt.com and they almost always have gold and every few weeks they have SFTB.  Seconary on those is like $130 - 150 I think. https://www.masterofmalt.com/search/#search=blanton's&page=1&sort=_score&direction=desc

Those are really something he can't find locally since they onyl release the regular 93 proof blanton's in the states.

Is RHF hard to find?  For me, I would say yes.  The one local store that had it @ $50 hasn't seemed to get any more since I bought the last one a couple years ago.  I haven't made any heroic efforts to go hunting for it.  When you're dealing with higher end brands, the availability can be very regional and sporadic.
