jp_stargazer
Forgot about Devil's Cut... A little more searching shows the Rye will change as well (the 90 proof stays, 80 proof cream label is dead I guess). The White and all the flavored whiskies will have the new taller bottle. TheOakMonster
Interesting to see the different opinions. My impression of Double Oak was quite negative: To me, a very simple, unremarkable nose, along with a rather weak flavor profile and a general character that reminded me of small-barrel craft whiskey. I can't go as far as small-barrel craft made but can with simple, unremarkable nose and weak flavor. After tasting several times I see no need to ever buy a bottle. Gentleman Racer
I was surprised by the wave of positive reviews on this and, being a Beam fan, was anxious to try a bottle. Sad to say I don't care for it at all. I find it weak, thin, and lacking distinct flavors. I think it's dry, unbalanced, and astringent; qualities I'd lump in with it being too young. I didn't care for the Beam Bonded in much the same way. I agree that it's reminiscent of craft whiskey in that it's not ready for prime time. And yet I couldn't get enough of that Old Tub they sold in the gift shop, even though that's got to be a very similar mashbill and age. Strange. Hop
Anyone who has the JBDO also have any Old Taylor 6 year around? If so do a side by side comparison. While the proof on the DO is slightly higher I'm betting the overall age is less - very comparable to my taste and the OT6 is less expensive by half depending on your local prices

It was distilled by Beam for a while but is now distilled by BT. Or are you talking about the old National Distillers OT?
ethangsmith
I figure in the next 5-10 years PA will get it on the shelf. The PLCB are such trendsetters, you know. I may have to cross borders to get a taste of this stuff.

ethangsmith
Did a 3 hour round trip today and picked up a bottle of Double Oak. Upon initial testing against a recent bottle of Extra Aged black label and some OGD, the Double Oak is the loser, unfortunately (But only by a little bit). It's slightly similar to Devil's Cut- barrel bitters mixed with sweet, young whiskey flavor. Is it bad? No. Is it better than Devil's Cut? Yes. If it comes to the shelf in PA, will I get a bottle? Yes. Despite it not being as good as Extra Aged or OGD to my palette, it's still really good. I agree with previous comments about heavier barrel notes and astringency. I'm going to give this one some time and I'll revisit it frequently. Maybe I'll make friends with it? I would say it's considerably better than the standard Beam white label, the Devil's Cut, and a few others in the line.

I really liked it (apparently more than most) but more as a "change of pace" kind of pour. We had some extremely hot days in September and I found this "refreshing" (if you can call a bourbon that) especially since ice didn't hurt it. But if I'm in the mood for a big and bold bourbon, this isn't if.
ken_mays
The last bottle I had, I couldn't taste much except oak and a bit of underlying Beam yeastfunk. I feel JBBIB is a better balance all around and the higher proof doesn't hurt.
dSculptor
Tried it recently, it's ok, seems to me a big waste of another fresh barrel, what do they think ---that these barrels grow on trees?

I understand where you're coming from Don, and agree, it's okay. More to follow soon. FWIW, I do like the new bottle.
