I tend to use a little distilled water with the higher proofs. To me this made Stagg Jr very enjoyable. Nothing wrong with Larceny. It's what stays in my decanter these days as an everyday juice. I'll need to try Bernhiems, I've seen it around.

Personal preferences are so varied. I love wheated bourbon and I really tried to like Larceny. Went through 2 bottles and just felt off. To my taste it leaves some kind of aftertaste that I can't quite put my finger on what it is but that isn't exactly pleasant. Re: Bernheim I tried it once in a restaurant and while it was pleasant it was REALLY sweet. Might make sense as a dessert but I'm glad I tried it before I bought a bottle.

I retract the crap comment. I know better than to try to proclaim that I know what is good or bad per se. I didn't love batch 1 personally but more power to you if you did...

I'm also on the fence with Junior.  I had a batch one that was good, but didn't seem to be as rich as regular ER, just bolder.  I liked it fine, but not enough to pay double over standard ER.  But then another day the Junior hit just right, so, I'll grab one the next time I see one, but not going hunting.

^^^^I'll second what Eric said.  I was very disappointed with both Jr. #1 and EHTBP #1.  The only descriptor I felt they deserved was "hot as hell"!

Fortunately, I overcame those impressions by staying in the game.  I've also found subsequent batches of both brands to be very enjoyable.  Some things just hit us differently, even from day to day.  There is no right or wrong way to do it, just enjoy the ride and try to learn a lesson from each experience.

The first part here was my recollection, although I didn't stay in the game.  I found mingles that tamed both down and allowed me to get through the bottles without it feeling like a chore, but haven't bought another since.  Although I may give a Stagg Jr a chance since it seems most folks have found the later batches to be better than the first.  Especially since the chances of getting a Stagg Sr anymore or slim to none.

But that Willett Pot Still Reserve tho . . . (I still need to make a lamp from that bottle!)

That's my desert island bourbon.  And by that, I mean I would rather be stranded on a desert island than drink that bourbon.

I actually tried it again at the distillery last month, and enjoyed it more than last time I tried it.  I have gone from actively hating it to just meh-ing it.

To the OP, yes those are extremely overpriced.  I wouldn't have been able to resist some thinly veiled sarcasm to the store people.  Locally we have two big chains that have opened or bought out a bunch of stores.  It seems everything I might like is overpriced like $5 or more there.  They may have a good sale item once in a while.  I'd know that ahead of time, or not waste a trip.  The really interesting stuff probably never touches a shelf.

Luckily, there are some smaller chains; everything around MSRP.

As to Stagg JR, I bought one when it was fairly new, don't know what batch.  It tasted like ER, but younger and more proof to me.  I thought it was just ok, not a repeat purchase at around $50.

There is a Total Wine, but they are always out of the harder to find bourbons. I do keep checking back time to time though. I'm in Upstate SC. Some of these places are ridiculous.

That's my experience exactly. They tend to have excellent prices on the bourbons they do not have. And not necessarily "the harder to find bourbons."
