Hard To Find Bottles On The Shelf?

I've been intrigued recently by some of the posts about "having lots of Stagg Jr. lining the shelf" and other comments on tougher finds that are common in some areas. In Memphis for example Blanton's is very common. In most rural area stores near here, EC 12 is still on the shelves. CHET is available in most all stores I frequent (except Seasoned Wood) and SA Old Scout 10 & SB everywhere.

What great pour is available often in your neck of the woods?

These are in most stores I visited the last several days in DE.

Blantons, Sazerac Rye (showed up in all stores this week), CEHT SmB and SiB (most stores), BT, EC12 (NAS), SAOS 7 & 10.

Lots of Orphan Barrels of mixed variety, a few WTMK, KC2001, lots of FR store selects, ER, CEHTSB, SAOS10, Blood Oath if you like that sort of thing, to name a few

FacePlant, it sounds like we visit some of the same stores. I do know of a few stores in the Memphis area that usually have several bottles of Stagg Jr on the shelf. Mostly because they've got it priced at $60, but one store has 4 on the shelf every time I go in and their price is $50. That reminds me that I need to pick up another of those since they are all batch 5.

ER and Blanton's are everywhere, and in case lots if you want it. ECBP is hard to find, but I occasionally find OWA in decent supply. I haven't seen any W12 or BTAC in the Memphis area yet this fall.

Due to its proximity to DC and the wealth concentrated in the region, Maryland is susceptible to fads.  Basically whatever is "in" becomes an emergency must have for all the business types to have at the office to impress clients.  I'm exaggerating a fair bit, but let's just say that a lot of great malt whiskies, ryes, and bourbons get left on the shelf in favor of whatever is trending.  This fashion ADHD worked in my favor when Japanese Whisky got the Whisky Bible treatment a couple years back.  I think the region serves as a pretty decent Bellwether for the nation.

As to what specific "sought after" whiskies are available for non-ridiculous prices here:

-Baby Saz, though I haven't seen it the past couple months

-Stagg Jr.

-Rock Hill Farms

-Blanton's

-Eagle Rare

-Old Forester Birthday Bourbon (sells out quickly but actually makes it to shelves)

-High West Midwinter Night's Dram

-Bourye

-Wild Turkey Limited Editions (serious shelf turds in this area)

-All the Orphan Barrels minus Lost Prophet and Old Blowhard

-1792 Port

To be honest I would have to reconfirm all of these.  I don't buy most of these whiskies so I don't have a big reason to look for them.

I won't go into the scotch whiskies that make it here and languish forever.  Suffice it to say, there are a lot.

I'm in a control state (Virginia). We just recently went to a lottery system so just about anything allocated goes through that and is pure luck to get. Prior to that I used to reliably be able to secure stuff like Stagg jr and ECBP. Now just about the only thing we can get on shelves is Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare 10, and Blantons. Plus we don't get any store selections.

For anyone who lives on Long Island(NY) just saw about 8 bottles of OF Birthday at Waverly Liquors in Setauket for $80.

I bought one bottle and left the rest for others to enjoy.

Very sporting of you, not only to post this 'alert'; but mainly for leaving so many on the shelf for others to experience.   This is really in the spirit of SB.com.    Good for you.

Yes, but unfortunately only as long as flippers in your area of Long Island aren't currently reading the board!

Might be best to say you saw them in your region and ask members to PM you if they are interested in the location. Unfortunately there are flippers who happen to be members but at least the general public can't send a PM. And if it is a SB.com member who posts regularly that PM's you it might also reduce the chance of it being a flipper.

Yes, I am jaded! B)  And yes, flippers have no qualms about abusing this forum. <_<

You make a good point. Will do if I have an opportunity in the future.

Flippers, like vultures, soar above these board posts, hoping to find some new trend-bourbon to swoop down on, hoard and re-sell for profit.  Two ways to handle a vulture-----12 ga. or give them nothing to swoop down for, ie. NO posts on popular trends.

Here's a popular trend that indicates the next HUGE thing will be Griffin Claw Boubon!    Shhhhh.     Don't let 'em in on that, or it'll be gone when we go after it.     Mum's the word!

Are there really members that are flippers?

I think it would be helpful (maybe in the deals forum) to have "Bottle Hunt" thread. I am on a craft beer forum where members post locations in their city to find limited bottles. I think this would be helpful for members to find bourbon they are looking for. Is PM'ing the proper etiquette here? If so, If anyone in Minneapolis is looking for Stagg Jr.....PM me and I'll give you a spot that has been receiving regular shipments at $45.

I now feel guilty about my post yesterday of where I saw several bottles of ETL on the shelf. Good thing stores have 1 bottle limits, tho Im not sure how much it is enforced. I think PM is a better approach; you can get an idea of who your messaging with via their former posts, tho you still dont know if they are flippers. I think a bottle hunt thread would be great to find stuff & to give members a heads up to where there is a shelf full.

As long as they leave plenty of Cooper's Craft on the shelves for me, I will be happy.  I'm bunkering a few cases of that stuff, that and the Woodford Reserve Master's Collection, which are rare unicorns around here.

My opinion is that this best kept to pm, preferably with people you "know" electronically via the forum. The audience is always wider than you think on the open forum. The Maryland and DC guys I've reached out to have been very receptive and forthcoming, as have been the people I've contacted in the "I'm traveling to your state" posts. I try to pay that distribution of information forward when I can.

I wouldn't feel guilty, I'm a firm believer in Karma.

I recently was at a local LS and was amazed to find 6 bottles of ECBP on the shelf. I brought 2 up and mentioned I was surprised to find these sitting out. The owner told me to grab the other 4 as it had been sitting for over a month. I felt guilty but at least I stuck to my personal code. None of those bottles will leave my house unless it is a gift to a bourbon enthusiast.

I wonder if there is an option to start private messaging groups where members could share finds that don't show up on the general forum where guests could be monitoring for flipping opportunities.

I have thought about starting a Chicago group that can help each other find bottles, but obviously, wouldn't want it a public posting.  Maybe I can speak to the boss about it some time

Yes there are Bb. There are a few members here that no longer post much, if at all, and they're really not contributing members any more. IMHO, they only visit the site to glean what info they can for their own benefit.

Good idea Derek. Would Rockford would be considered the Chicago area? ;)

Cheers! Joe

That would be great to have a chicago group! Could share tips on where to buy, & perhaps arrange some tasting events!

My wife's from Chicago (although she hasn't lived there since 1968).  Is that good enough for us to get included?B)

I would love to connect with members in NC and SC on here to exchange tips, ideas, best places to buy etc. I frequently explore and purchase in both states and would love to learn and share with others locally. Even though I am still fairly new and learning more and more about bourbon, I appreciate the insights and thoughts of members in this community and will do anything to help preserve the knowledge of this board.

There have been a few recent joins by NC'rs on here and I've been kicking around a get together after the new year for a tasting and meet/greet if we can put something together

Awesome-I'd definitely be interested in doing something like that in the new year. I'm located near the charlotte area myself. Let me know if I can help at all, Hop.
