I'd like to know if there is a list of all the wheated bourbons that are available, here at SB. I've looked, but haven't found one yet.

It seems I'm developing an affinity for wheaters and would like to explore them further!

There are three of the big distillers that make wheated bourbon: Makers Mark, Heaven Hill (Old Fitzgerald - Larceny), and Buffalo Trace (Weller, WLW. VW).

Rebel Yell and David Nicholson are most probably sourced from HH.

Smooth Ambler is supposed to be releasing some of their own make wheated bourbon.  Maybe Willett too.  I wouldn't expect a large amount of either of those.

Beam realeased a wheated bourbon a while back.  It was some sort of one off expensive experiment.  Reviews were ok.  I just couldn't bring myself to pay nearly $50 for 375ml.

I don't know if an official list exists, but there aren't a whole heckuva lot of them (and some of these depend on what you mean by 'available.'  Do they exist?  Sure.  Can you buy some of them at your corner store?  Prolly not..)

Wellers (W12, OWA, WSR, WLW)

Larceny and the Old Fitgerald line

Rebel Yell series

Van Winkles (old Rip, Lot B, Pappy)

Makers family

I may have missed a few smaller NDPs but those are the most popular ones.

There's also a wheated whiskey (not bourbon) called Bernheim.

You might start with the Whiskey Tree at the top of this General Discussion section. It probably has more information that you really want at this stage of your apprenticeship but eventually you'll find it a valuable resource.

Isn't the David Nicholson wheated? or were you including that in your Rebel Yell Series since both are Luxco?

There is a decent listing of wheated bourbons on the Bourbonr blog. http://bourbonr.com/blog/bourbonr-guide-to-wheated-bourbon/

This list isn't complete (it doesn't have all the craft/micro-distilled wheaters, like Woodhat Spirits' Bourbon Rubenesque), but it is a good start to guide you on your journey.

As mentioned by dcbt, you might have difficulty finding many of these at your local shop, especially the wheaters from craft/micro-distillers. There is actually a craft wheated bourbon that I've tried and liked, from Fingerlakes Distilling, called MckKenzie Bourbon. They have transitioned into aging their whiskies in 53 gallon barrels (they used to use smaller barrels). I'm pretty sure they are currently only doing single barrel expressions of their wheated McKenzie Bourbon (at least the 2 bottles I've purchased were single barrels). Full of flavor, and it has a unique floral/herbal quality to it (just lingering in the background), but it doesn't have that new make flavor or too much oak, since they are now using full-sized barrel.

Watershed out of Ohio has a decent, albeit young wheater, if you're not afraid to give craft distillers a chance. Also maybe a tad difficult to find. Looking forward to seeing how it develops as they come out with older bottlings.

Thanks guys!

dcbt, the Wellers are generally available, with the exception of WLW (and by available, I mean at the stores for purchase.) Old Fitzgerald is not available in Oregon, but several Rebel Yell's are, including: Rebel Yell ($16.95), Rebel Yell Small Batch Reserve ($19.95).

Of these Rebel Yell's, which would you guys recommend?

Larceny is available, and I like it; Makers is available, but it doesn't rev my motor.

So it looks like Rebel Yell is next on my list to try!

Thanks again.

Thanks, Conquistador! I checked out the blog, and noticed one other wheater from it that's available in Oregon: CEHT. Duly added to my list as well!

To answer your Rebel Yell question, I've only had the new 10 year single barrel, which I find to be very good. Similar to W12 on my palate.

CEHT isn't a wheated line. Only the Seasoned Wood expression was. The standard small batch and single barrels are all the low rye Buffalo Trace mash bill #1.

Also I think you will find that the Weller line is NOT generally available other than maybe the lowest one in the line WSR. OWA and W12 are pretty much unicorns for most of the population .

Standard MM is OK, but Makers 46 and MM Cask Strength are my preferences in the MM line.

The only 10 year Rebel Yell I could find on OLCC"s website is the 10 year Single Malt ($49.95) -- is that the one you're referring to?

Is OLCC the government?  Rebel Yell 10 is a single barrel but hardly a single malt.  But if OLCC is a govt site, then that would explain the error.  The price is in line with what the RY10 goes for.  There is no such thing as Rebel Yell single malt, so I'd guess you have the right product there.  No thanks to the OLCC.

I really like MM Cask Strength, Weller 12 and Rebel Yell 10 yr Single Barrel.  I also quite enjoy Maker's 46 but I find regular MM boring.  I find CEHT Seasoned Wood to be excellent but may not be worth the trouble to chase it down now since it's already gone.

I have a bottle of Larceny  I've never gotten around to trying.  I haven't tried any of the other Rebel Yell products except the 10 yr SB.  I've also never tried Old Fitz so can't say.

In my opinion, Weller Special Reserve and Antique 107 are overrated on this site and the way people chase OWA like an LE baffles me.  It's kind of unique and I buy it every now and then, but to me it's nothing special.

My impression of Rebel Yell is, the stuff from the last 15 or so years is generally considered bottom shelf.  It's more or less like Old Fitz Prime (doesn't get much love around here).

By contrast the 10 year old SB seems to get good reviews, but it is $50.

Makers 46 is finished with French oak staves.  Some people like it.  To me, it tasted like vanilla extract added to regulat MM, sort of odd, not really my thing.

Never had the RYSB but it is receiving a favorable reception around here. Have had regular ol' RY and would not recommend it.

Yes, Oregon is a control state, and OLCC is: Oregon Liquor Control Commission.

Here is a cop/paste directly from OLCC website of the description:  Item 4052B: REBEL YELL 10YR SINGLE MAL

The end of last word there is truncated, probably due to space limitations. My guess is that the MAL is short for malt, but per you guys, should be barrel. Probably someone mistyped it into the website's description.

Whatever the case, it's been added to my list of bourbons to try!

Rocktown from Little Rock, AR offers a wheated recipe bourbon. Bought a store pick single barrel expression which had good base flavor but just too young and raw for my taste, especially at >$50. I remember thinking that I wanted to taste the same juice at the 8 year mark.

I would avoid the stand Rebel Yell expression, but the small batch Reserve is worth it for the money

I just bought two bottles of Rebel Yell 10 year old in Eugene based on the OLCC entry, so it is definitely a misprint.  Looks like there's plenty in Portland, so it may be time for a trip to your favorite store. :)
