I really like MM Cask Strength, Weller 12 and Rebel Yell 10 yr Single Barrel.  I also quite enjoy Maker's 46 but I find regular MM boring.  I find CEHT Seasoned Wood to be excellent but may not be worth the trouble to chase it down now since it's already gone.

I have a bottle of Larceny  I've never gotten around to trying.  I haven't tried any of the other Rebel Yell products except the 10 yr SB.  I've also never tried Old Fitz so can't say.

In my opinion, Weller Special Reserve and Antique 107 are overrated on this site and the way people chase OWA like an LE baffles me.  It's kind of unique and I buy it every now and then, but to me it's nothing special.

I agree with you on MM Cask and regular MM, but I waffle between preferring W12 or OWA. I prefer higher proof bourbons, so the OWA obviously kills it there, but W12 is better in the complexity category.

I think the reason people talk about how great OWA is (I agree that Special Reserve is not special) is that it's a 107 proof wheater, and a pretty decent one, for mid-$20s at MSRP. There aren't a lot of bourbons I can get for that price that I enjoy nearly as much (especially since Chicago no longer gets the old Heaven Hill BiB, which, seriously, is the best value in bourbon, for my money.

I'd like to know if there is a list of all the wheated bourbons that are available, here at SB. I've looked, but haven't found one yet.

It seems I'm developing an affinity for wheaters and would like to explore them further!

Although it is a "wheat whiskey", not a wheated bourbon, Bernheim's Wheat Whiskey is worth a try.  (Hey, Thig, I still remember my mistake from a couple years ago when I called it a wheated bourbon - some things just stick with me.)  It is worth checking out.

Watershed out of Ohio has a decent, albeit young wheater, if you're not afraid to give craft distillers a chance. Also maybe a tad difficult to find. Looking forward to seeing how it develops as they come out with older bottlings.

Fortunately I live in Columbus and it is easy for me to find here. I honestly don't know what their intentions are around older bottlings since they don't have a ton of storage space and they also make vodka and gin.

Have you tried it? What do you think about it? I enjoyed it but I wasn't running out the door to buy another.

For what it's worth, this article has some interesting info on the aging of their bourbon. I can't verify the information of course. (5th paragraph down.)

I have not had it recently but I felt that it was pretty good. I had a bottle of their first batch they released but I haven't bought it since. I've been thinking about getting another one however.

That's funny, I didn't even remember mentioning that. I bought 2 bottles of Bernheims back then and still have one of them, probably says a lot about what I thought of it.

Well, went and purchased a bottle of Maker's 46 yesterday as it is on sale through November.

The regular Maker's didn't really rev my motor, but I kinda like the 46. I get a bit of a floral nose, with cinnamon, caramel, and vanilla. On the palette, I get a definite cinnamon spice in the background, with a little caramel, and some smoke and oak.

Overall, I like it, and appreciate the recommendation!

There is a good article in the winter 2016 edition of The Whiskey Advocate about wheated bourbons.

This is a great thread as I find myself trending towards wheaters more often than not when considering my options. it seems I fall in line with most that I agree MM is an OK option when looking for a wheater, but nothing about it to me gets me excited. However, Larceny I think hands down is the best out there right now for a wheater that is readily available on shelves, priced decently and makes for a great poor straight up or in a cocktail.

Would also love to hear more on the beenhiem wheat whiskey. More times than I can count I've almost snagged a bottle but have never followed through. Is it worth a bottle purchase or should I wait to hopefully try somewhere without the commiting to a whole bottle?

Thanks in advance!

I'm a big fan of pretty much anything Weller and the Van Winkles I've been able to try (10, 12, 15) I've  liked as well.  I agree with others that MM is just "ok" but I do enjoy the M46. Larceny, however is one that I just don't care for. There is something in the finish that is just off-putting for me. I have a bottle of Old Fitzgerald BIB that I haven't tried yet. I understand this basically IS Larceny. I've been trying to get my hands on some RY10 to no avail.

I agree about Bernheim. It's not bad but dominated by a soft, light, sweetness of wheat with not much else.

MM is just ok, but MM Cask Strength is delicious, and so is Rebel Yell 10 and EH Taylor Seasoned Wood

Appreciate the feedback from all of you. based on previous posts on here I'm thinking I should look to add RY and/or the MM46 or MM CS. If you had to rank these options what do you all recommend?

Rebel Yell 10, then very close second, MM Cask, and I'm not a fan of MM46. Rebel Yell 10 is a limited edition, so if you have the chance to grab it, I'd do it sooner than later.

I really enjoy the Wellers but, alas, they are so difficult to find anymore.  Fortunately, I do like Larceny so I have a readily available wheated bourbon option.  Of the three you mention, I have never had RY10 so I can't rank it.

My preferences are

OWA107

MMCS

WL12

Larceny

MM46

MM

Totally agree with your list but I would add two at the top: 1) OWA Single barrel picks and 2) RY10  then standard OWA etc.

Has anyone had the Redemption wheated bourbon? Just picked one up as Weller seems to not exist in Colorado.

I would be happy to have a decent priced wheater with good flavor available.

No kidding?  I've sorta been keeping my eyes open for that #100 if only to try it.  After all, I've sprung for at least two bottles of David Nicholson 1843 so what's another $30?

Did not care for the bottle I had. Just all bitter hot mess. I tried another SBrs bottle and it was marginally better but not something I would ever spend $ on again.

Wellers have been around the state very recently in fact. There are still those who think buying 2 dozen bottles are acceptable practice from one store and even "feel bad" about doing it.....

MMPS - the Private Selects from Mac's (Atlanta), Spec's (Tejas), and Yankee Spirits (Taxachusetts, but not on spirits, wine or beer!) have all been a real crowd favorite among swimming officials (and ME!).  Varying menus of barrel staves provide unique flavor profiles, all of which have been great.  But you need to open the new bottle, pour a dram or 2, chat about life for a while and let the heat blow off for 5 or 10 minutes before imbibing.  Still a great wheater if you can get a taste before you buy.  JMHO, of course . . . . . . .  :D

WLW and OWA/WA107 barrel picks from the Loch & K(e)y Society are still my favorite favorites.  ORVWs and PVWs are pretty good, too.

And finally, if you're looking for something to do with that almost full bottle of Bernheim Wheat Whiskey, try a vatting with WTRB - 3:2 is my current recipe that combines the sweetness of the Bernheim with the punch of the Rare Breed.  YUM!

And, as always, YMMV.   ;)
