What will happen to your Bunker when you kick the bucket?

In several threads, many of us have revealed we have sizeable bunkers and joked around about what will happen to them if we never drink them down and kick off with a ton of unopened, and presumably valuable, bottles.  I know it's easy to say the bunker should be consumed at a funeral, that you might adopt fellow SBers etc., but in reality, some bunkers are too big for any of those consumption scenarios to be feasible, and who wants to adopt a bunch of whiskey swilling adults.  Has anyone put some serious thought into this subject and devised an actual succession plan for your hoard?  Without very specific instructions (which I have not drafted), Mrs. jvd99 would be lost as to what to do with all my bottles.  I think a doable solution would be having a party with local bourbon enthusiasts (and SBers) who can buy/bid on bottles with the caveat that all proceeds go to charity and the bottle must be opened after purchase but before taking possession.  This would get rid of the bunker in one day, be legal (I think), and support a good cause.

If anything is left, I expect the wife would keep some for herself, and then the sons-in-law could have a crack at it.  If they don't want it, wife would either sell the remaining bottles or dump them.  I certainly won't care.

I'm sure that my daughter and SIL will enjoy it.  I would include my wife but I haven't seen her take a spirit drink for about a decade.

I have made no formal plans what so ever. Kinda hoping that is still a ways off.

Many of my bottles, including what might be perceived as higher end stuff, are open but there are some duplicates of nice bottles still sealed. My brother and a couple of friends would likely have the best chance of figuring out what is what and might even drink some rather than trying to sell them should I get run over a by bus tomorrow! Always was a bit suspicious of MARTA...

At some point I have considered trying to do a better job of doing inventory with a eye towards what is what and what is open versus closed but right now I haven't even done a good job of keeping up to date with what I have acquired recently!

Tomorrow, Yeah that's the ticket, I'll do it tomorrow! Or the next day... B)

I've kidded somewhat about this before, but at the same time, I'm halfway serious. First off, a good old Irish wake would be in order. Next, a few of my bottles will probably be designated for assignment. After that, I believe that between my wife, son and Vosgar, my bunker will be taken care of appropriately. FWIW, Gary and my son work together, and Gary's nickname for my wife is "The Evil One" . Could be interesting. :D

There's something else I've been thinking about. My remains will be cremated. I know that there are certain rules/laws and such that have to be adhered to concerning proper urns for a persons ashes. But, just for shit and giggles, I'm keeping an empty 07 WLW on hand just in case. :P

For some reason, the term "barrel char" comes to mind

DW and I need to get all of our paperwork done -- will, medical directives, etc.  Not having this stuff done means a real burden on close relatives in the event of our untimely demise.  I'll include a bequest for the contents of my home bar and bunker: some special bottles for special friends, and a big party at a convention where I've been volunteering for many years.  The mahogany cabinet bar itself, well, I need to see who among friends or family might want to bring that beast into their life...

Good topic! ... I keep up to date records and inventory of everything I collect ( which is quite a lot: everything from wooden statues to street lights) So that when the time comes whomever takes control of the situation has ample records/value of everything I have, Yeh it has been time consuming ,but it all has a purpose......eventually.

You could have something of significant value that you know of, but if you don't have any info for the person that has to deal with it when your gone..... it's worth nothing.

My Dad has an extremely large collection of everything, he converted his 2.5 garage into a general store, and has everything, literally!! He keeps saying that's it all for us kids (4 of us ..me being the oldest). He cant stand computers so he has everything marked with a sticker on the bottom with the price and what he thinks it's worth. It's always been about the hunt for him, me and a lot of us.. He cant buy anything anymore because he simply has no more room...not even for a bottle.(which is probably his main collection...bottles).

My point is...... that my Dad is 74 yrs.old. he has no more room, but loves the hunt... I keep telling him....Dad start selling it!!! Then we don't have to deal with it, plus you get more room and more money to go out and hunt again.

Drink it, Sell it, Give it away, or make sure you have it all inventoried / valued for the person who has to deal with it when your gone, or else it's all for not.........!

I've occasionally said I should make a list of the valuable bottles so my family could sell them (if still unopened) when I'm gone.  Every time I bring it up they chastise me, as if making such a list would hasten my demise.  Beyond that, and assuming my wife outlives me, I suspect she'd (a) throw a big bash; (b) keep a few bottles for herself; and (c) distribute the rest to those who would appreciate it.  She knows who they are.

Pretty sure (after looking, of course, and - this is NOT a formal legal opinion which I am not licensed to give in Illinois but am licensed to give where I am typing but it STILL is not formal so don't rely on it) that Illinois law allows any "permanent urn" to be used.  Your bottle would be considered "permanent".

BUT, after reading the rest of this thread, I suggest putting a note in it or, better, engraved ON it telling future viewers who/what is inside.  I'd hate (although I'm laughing now) for some dusty hunter to find it years from now and think he or she can reconstitute the contents by adding water.  You know how we get with old bourbons.

I'm sure my future sons-in-law, whomever they might be, will mix it all with Diet Coke and Sprite. I hope every pour gives them a hangover to end all hangovers. Sons o' B****es!

I don't know about this subject but when a prominent Indy attorney went to jail for embezzlement several years ago, his wife gave away all of his bottles of scotch.  Mostly high end.  I know because she gave some to a friend who gave me two bottles - Mac 21 year and Glenlivet 18.   Apparently, he had quite the collection.  The moral of this story is you never know where your liquor will go unless you drink it.  Drink the good stuff, leave the cheap stuff.

LOL Gary.

FWIW, there's already some "barrel char" in that bottle. I forgot to give 'er a swirl before the last pour. Not gonna complain though. My ashes mixed with WLW barrel char for eternity...... ;)

Cheers! Joe

Like many/most others, I'm hoping that day is a long ways off.  If it should happen tomorrow let's say, I'm sure my wife would consult my dad about it.

I had mentioned to her that I wouldn't expect it to be consumed at a funeral, but my hope would be that after my dad peruses the lot - I would hope the open bottles he doesn't take find their way to some of the local GBS folks.  I do have a spreadsheet that I make a serious effort at reconciling twice a year (part of the post-Bardstown ritual), and she could pass that along.  About 2/3 of my bottles are opened already.

So this may be a bit over the top but I've actually written the specifics into my will.

Just thinking seriously about this topic and considering my age,  it has inspired me to start drinking more of my inventory.

I hope to have another 50 years of drinking yet, but if something were to happen I'd hope my wife would call my friends and let them raid the bunker.
