Awww Hell who am I kidding I'm sure I'll stop in Hop, All I can say is if you are in E'town this weekend and don't pick up a bottle of this it will be a huge mistake on your part. We had tasted the Barrel #4044 (13+) and were impressed. We opened his bottle #3094 tonight (14+) and is was in a word spectacular. Actually you can't really describe it in one word. Huge flavor as soon as it came out of the bottle and only got better as it opened up. It just fills your mouth with flavor starting with sweetness and then in the middle there is just a touch of spice and it finishes like a beautiful song that just fades at the end leaving you wanting more (a soft warm heat and no burn). Basically an exceptional bottle. I'm already considering going by again tomorrow and picking up another bottle. I'm fairly new to bourbon but after the first sip I knew this one was special. A kind fellow SBer recommended it to me. I would trade one of most releases of ECBP for that KC bottle. To me, it's all flavor intensity and sweetness without rough edges. Great buy. Madhatter, The bottle we had was #4044 and it is good, actually very good. We just had a pour of Barrel #3094 and easily surpasses #4044. Full flavor right out of the bottle and only gets better as it opens up. Mouth filling sweetness at the start with a touch of spice in the middle and flavor that lasts til the end as it fades into a warmth with no burn. Absolutely wonderful bottle of bourbon. GaryT
Enjoying the last big pour from my last ER (an ER10SB, which used to just be ER, but not to be confused with . . . screw it, you know what I mean). Have had this bottle open for nearly 5 years - some indication it wasn't a big favorite, although these last two pours have been my favorite. He is a big Manhattan drinker so I want to get him a good bottle of Bourbon/rye for said cocktail of choice. Need some suggestuons on whether to go bourbon or rye, and without breaking the bank, but don’t want a cheap bottle either. Thanks in advance! Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk When it comes to classic cocktails I tend to be a bit particular (or is that peculiar???). A Manhattan is made with rye. Period. End of sentence. You can certainly mix bourbon (or Canadian whisky if you must) with sweet vermouth and bitters but that ain't a Manhattan. It is rather like a "Vodka" Martini. It is OK if you want to screw up your dry vermouth with vodka instead of gin but don't insult it by calling it a Martini! That said, a ballpark price range would help. Don't know what is readily available in NC. Off the cuff I might suggest Pikesville rye or Col. EH Taylor Rye as something a bit unusual, a little pricier than someone might spend on themselves but still good quality and a great companion to sweet vermouth in a Manhattan! Oh, and leave the fruit salad for dinner! Chunks of various fruit also have no place in a Manhattan, I don't care what Dale DeGroff says. A good quality Luxardo or brandied cherry is all you need. Save those day glow monstrosities for a kids ice cream sundae. That might be more information than you were bargaining for. Especially since you didn't say you were the Manhattan drinker.... I have forty-five years' experience of drinking Manhattans of all kinds, shapes, variations. What Bruce said is all that needs to be said, especially about the non-day-glow cherries. Twenty ryes to choose from, and I now use Pikesville 110 proof unless I have a "newbie" at the table; then, I use Ritt so they aren't surprised. My sweet vermouth of choice is Dolins, but I have another half dozen in the bar fridge in case I get frisky.
OldFitzWithTheGoldLabel
My other set of in-laws (who frown on alcohol in general and bourbon in particular) are staying with us. So, instead of having some bourbon neat; I have to drink "ginger ale" (which disguises the EW BIB quite well). Nm0369
Revisiting a bottle of RY10 I opened two weeks ago. I don't feel like it has changed much...still too much oak for me neat. I added a full cap of Dasani to a 1.5oz pour and it's quite enjoyable this way. Getting more of that wheat sweetness I enjoy without having to sift through a lumberyard. CardsandBourbon
Just wanted to let you all know that there is no more of Barrel #3094 (the one that I was going on about last night) available. The Black Tot, who is on a ship somewhere in the Atlantic contacted me and I picked up the last two bottles for him. Decided that a small pour of would be the nice way to end the night. beasled
Cracked a friend's bottle of Maker's Mark Cask Strength, I thought it was excellent. Rich, suprisingly mellow for the proof (and a lot more so than the standard bottling). Looking forward to cracking my own one open.

Charlutz
Some OE101. I got a little of the whiff of must, leaves and organics that Harry was talking about. It's not overpowering and the whiskey indeed has a nice nose. His description is accurate, even though his adjectives are not ones you'd usually associate with compliments. The mid palate for me was a bit astringent and I was initially disappointed however there was a really late vanilla bomb on the finish that was extremely nice. Unfortunately it was only on the first sip as after that the roof of my mouth began to numb and my taste buds I'm assuming began to dull. That was unexpected for a 101 proofer. I added some water and the numbing did not get worse but it was too late to recover. I'll start with water next time in hopes of preserving the nice finish for more than one sip. Figuring that my compromised palate was not worthy of a top shelf pour, I went for some value and had a couple pours of CRNH. Enjoyable if not distinctive or overly complex. This is one bottle that still sits on the shelf around here (sometimes keeping the Masters Keep company which I find even harder to understand). So much potential and I really wanted to like this one but it didn't quite deliver for me. A bit oak driven but not excessively so but rather thin on mouth feel (I blame it on the 91 proof. Why 91????) It is thin even compared to the Masters Keep at 86.6 which is just so much better to me and I am still not seeing much of a price break on it even though it has been on the shelf now for 2+ years! Sure hoping WT Decades is better, presuming I can find any. In the mean time I will keep nursing my Masters Keep supplies as long as I can and if I ever see that go on sale I may well get more! I haven't opened my MK yet, and I did like the Diamond but I thought it felt a bit thin on the mouth feel as well. Other 90ish proofers (BT, W12, ER10, even MM, etc) don't feel as thin to me.
