I finally finished off that Bourye, so I opened a generic SAOS 10 year Single Barrel release.  It was released for the Maryland / DC area 1-3 years ago and was cask strength at 48.9%(ish, I don't have the bottle in front of me).  Oh man was this a great purchase.  Excellent classic SAOS nose.  Syrupy, velvety mouthfeel.  Lots of good classic bourbon notes.  It's a tad prickly at full strength, but calms down with a touch of water.  I tend to be careful about watering MGP spirit because it can result in an aspartame flavor that I don't love, but this one takes water well enough.

Now THIS is an example of a premium bourbon that puts a dumb smile on my face.  Great job MGP/SA!

Continuing with 4RSmB 16. It's tasting better than previously, I'm happy to admit, but still needs water to get there. Cheers!

Started with a new bottle of OSSB (very good), now on to something a little calmer, Rhetoric 20y a very underrated bourbon.

Going with the "Staggering Buffalo" to start the evening 2/3 Stagg Jr : 1/3 Buffalo Trace

Hop, while you enjoy a "Staggering Buffalo," I enjoy an "Eagle Weller" (1/2 Eagle Rare and 1/2 WSR).
Cheers!

Started with some Ancient Age Barrel 107. Started bitter but with a few drops added turned into a wonderful pour. Rich and flavorful.

Now trying a new vat. 2/3 4FSmB to 1/3 OGD114. Needed to mingle a bit but is now showing great promise. I think I'm going to mix up some more.

Did a blind sbs between ER10 and BT store pick to compare the same mashbill and a difference of 3 years.  Guessed wrong and surprised myself by picking the BT

Not an unusual outcome.  I really like ER10 but simply put, BT is more balanced. Now, the importance of balance in a bourbon is a matter of personal preference.  For some it is the be-all/end-all.  For others, it matters not.  For me it just depends on my mood at the time.

Finally. This SmB needs time and air to shine for sure, I'm not adding water anymore, still a little hot but I'm fine with it. Cheers!

Yep almost there. Amazing how the nose has opened up on it. There didn't really seem to be one initially.

I saw a review of the widely acclaimed smb 2012, they said, at first it was muted and not that good but after the bottle was opened for 2 month, it became incredible. We have to be patient with those small batches. ;-)

Cracked open a little 200ml bottle of AA BIB tonight, just because I hadn't had it for awhile and the urge got the best of me. There's something about the AA profile...... Starts off with a hit of rye and after a bit some sweetness comes through. Not a long finish, but that's OK. IIRC, it's the BT #2 mashbill and probably not much more than 4 years old, but I really love it.

Damn shame they quit making this one (and the AA 10yr) :(

A few drops can really make an average pour of Ancient Age shine!

I've been consuming a bit of OFitz BIB, PS KCSB and OF1920 this week.  Hell, I'm in the batters box with three fingers of the 1920 right now!
