Kepler
I did just a quick search but didn't find anything. So.. For those of you who make your own egg nog, do you have any favorite whiskies? What have you had the best luck with?
tanstaafl2
A nice blend of rum and cognac (or brandy)! Usually about half and half of Appleton reserve and a basic cocktail cognac like Chalfonte (or Ferrand 1849 if I want a bit more oomph!) but this might be good place to dispense with some of those big brand cognacs that really need to be used up if you have them. Why waste good bourbon? If you just have to use bourbon I tend to use BT as a house mixer and still throw some cognac in there as well. Although I confess I haven't made eggnog in a while. Too much good whiskey available in easy reach...
BigRich
I use Alton Brown's mix of dark rum, cognac, and bourbon in mine. Soooooo good. I don't use his brands thoughSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Richnimrod
Evan Williams Black Label is my 'go to' for Egg Nog. I've made it with OWSR, as well as OWA, and with JD Black (back when it was 90-proof; that was actually may fave back in the day for egg nog). Nowadays, the consistent profile of EW is a reliable winner for my egg nog. I'm actually gonna make some tomorrow, I beleive.
Wedelstaedt
I have had the best luck with WT101, JD ,Gentleman Jack and Crown Royal Black. Worst has been WSR The recipe I have is my Grandfather's recipe. It is about 65-70 years old. It calls for bourbon whiskey. The recipe is not specific on type of bourbon, but I believe ,given the era the recipe originated, a rye mash bill rather than a wheat mashbill bourbon was being used commonly. And probably best. My experience bears this out. I have always used a rye bourbon until last year. I tried WSR and it just didn't work. The bourbon didn't come through the other sweet ingredients . I am thinking, similar to why bartenders like a rye whiskey over bourbon for their sweeter libations. This year I am trying johnny drum black, gifted to me. I started the batch today. I will report back on results. I might try a rye whiskey next year. Merry Christmas to All
