Thig
OK maybe I am a day early on this one. I turned 60 this week and have reached the point financially I can drink pretty much anything I want. So my New Years Resolution is to only drink what I really love. There are some excellent lower priced bourbons and some really crappy higher priced ones so it isn't really about money. I will not drink mediocre bourbon regardless of the price. BottledInBond
Nice thread topic. I shall get back to opening more bottles right when I acquire them rather than directing them to the bunker area for s "special occasion" or whatever. Moi aussi. And boy was that 13yr Barrell Bourbon Batch #009 tasty - going to have to do a SBS with my bunkered (!?!) #006. I'm so confused . . . . Happy New Year to all y'all. Happy Birthday, and welcome to the over 60 club Thig! Not really a resolution, but I've pretty much decided to do what you mentioned. I'm gonna drink the stuff I like. Mainly from my bunker. I think I said this last year, but I'm still going to try and drink more from my bunker, and cut down on my purchases. I didn't do so well this year. It seems my bunker somehow stayed at almost exactly the same level that it was at the end of 2015. Oh well. I gotta try. Cheers! Joe
garbanzobean
I will still try anything once, but my tolerance for random purchases is at an all time low. If I don't know I will like it, I try it at a bar or a friend's house first.

Too many mediocre (or worse) offerings squatting on shelves that really aren't worth pouring, let alone being worth the asking prices.

Most of my regrets when I look at my stock are from 2015 or older or generous gifts from someone who didn't know whiskey. They are still hard to kill but I've gotten better at buying only what I like or trying in a bar first. This is sometimes tough to do if there is a limited window to make a decision on an LE, but I'll try to do my best.
GaryT
Really wanting to make 2017 the year that I have more restraint on purchasing - to align with consumption if not fall short of consumption. Feel like this has been my resolution each year, and at least last year was a big step in the right direction (estimates from my spreadsheet are I dropped purchases from 60+ the prior few years to < 40 in 2016 - so a 30% decrease). Of course, I think any successful strategy should attack the whole picture - so hopefully will have less colds and more consumption in 2017

I'm still willing to purchase new labels from the major distilleries (assuming they're in my preferred proof/age range) but am unwilling to purchase anything from the various NDP's out there unless I've tried it and know it's a good value. Guest
Exercise in some direct proportion to the amount of bourbon I drink. Earn the pours, so to speak.

PaulO
My main thing anymore is finding the time for a little happy hour. There's been enough labels loosing age statements in the last year or so. I can just hunt those. No need to worry about high priced LEs or real dusties. Well, if something just falls into my lap...
Tony Santana
I'll agree with what seems to be the consensus of the board. Keep the purchases under control, try to buy and drink the good stuff. I think my total collection grew in 2015, but not at the pace it had in years past, and to some extent that's because I expanded my horizons a bit with Scotch and other whiskeys. I think I'm beyond buying something just for the sake of trying it, at least in the bourbon category (other than perhaps a limited edition bottle if offered to me, and even there I know what has a good chance of being at least somewhat worth the purchase - i.e., didn't need to buy a Whoop and Holler) And hey - I'm doing okay so far. I haven't bought a single bottle in 2017 yet.
Prof_Stack
My resolution is to buy no Beam / Suntory products in 2017, and to drink less but drink better tasting stuff. One other thing is to have a designated no-alcohol day at least one day a week.

What's the matter with these kids today? Why can't they be like we were, perfect in every way?" Points to whomever can identify the source of that quote WITHOUT using Google or some similar lyrics search engine. AS I was lying in bed last night as fireworks went off outside, I started thinking about my bunker and my mortality (the New Year being almost upon me). My resolution: start drinking those "things" in the bunker that I am saving for some unidentified future important event. At my age, those events, except for the Big One, have pretty much gone past. Harry in WashDC
In keeping with my Resolution to start drinking bunkered rarities if I'd forgotten why I was saving them, today during the Rose Bowl, I poured some A.Smith Bowman Release 11 coffee barrel finish from a 3/4 full 750ml. I remember really liking this when I first tried it (and went through my other bottle over the course of a month - lots of sharing). First taste was REALLY strong - not much burn but the coffee overtone was overwhelming. Took a look at the bottle - proof = 134+. No wonder. Added about a half oz. of water to 1.875 oz. and let it sit. Better, but . . . Added another half ounce of water. Ahhhh. Going to put a note on the bottle to remind me to add water.
