raymoall
So, planning on have 3 other bourbon fans over on Super Bowl Sunday and wanted to have some fun with a line up of bourbons for SBS tastings, probably blind so any age statements don't influence the scoring. I searched the forum thinking this has been done before, but maybe my search term was off. I did read about how to set things up for SBS tastings. Anyway, the photo shows my initial line up. I would like to add a fourth, so recommendations are welcomed! Also, if anyone remembers a great line up, I'd like to know so my group can try to keep something like this going... But, I suppose anything could go as a theme -- price, proof, BIB, etc.
flahute
Since you are in that BIB theme, I'd consider adding more BIB's such as Beam Bonded and VOB6 BIB if you can get it. You have three Heaven Hill distilled bourbons there so you need some more variety. OR, you can find another HH BIB so you're tasting all in the same family to what differences you can tease out. Look for Dant or JTS Brown.
Harry in WashDC
OGD BIB (my trashcan Go To). Maybe WT 101. If you can find an OF BIB, maybe for tradition. BTW, I picked up an OE 101 last week. I get mushroom, leaf mold (like when you are doing yard work and brush your musty glove against your mouth and nose), and rotting wood (but not in a bad way). Thoughts? flahute
^^^^^Yes! OGDBIB is a must. Can't believe I forgot that one.
Harry in WashDC
I like Steve's JW Dant and VOB "6" BIB suggestions, too. VOB I covet and runs to the sweet end. JWD is a solid bottom shelfer and plays above its price IMO.
PaulO
I don't know if you can find it or not - Old Fitzgerald BIB. Another (probably $30+ but really good) is Henry McKenna 10 year BIB.
meadeweber
You have a ~ 4, 6, and 7 y/o. How about adding a 10 with HMcKBiB? Or change things up and add a wheater like Larceny if available. I also like the OGDBiB recommendation.
DeepCover
OWA, OF 1897 BIB
kevinbrink
Definitely McKenna BIB, that way you get teh same juice at different spans in time.
Swoboda
I'm very interested in the results. Virgin 101 7 Year old would be fun to add . . . McKenna BIB too.
raymoall
Thanks for all of the great suggestions! That's what I like about SB. Yeah, recently finished an OGD BIB, so I should have thought of that, too. Regarding the OE101, I've only had one pour, so need more time with it. But I will say it did have some distinct flavors, so I think it's a good one to have in the mix. Like the idea about the OF BIB, but wanted to keep the cost down, too. What about the OF 100 instead? I'll definately report back. Looks like I have enough recommends for the next SBS. Thanks again and please add more.
Swoboda
OF Signature 100 would be an excellent choice.
BottledInBond
I always like to mix something into a blind lineup that is overpriced crap that people think of as a premium brand, just so I can laugh when they pick one of the solid value pours already listed over the expensive junk. Unfortunately this approach could require you to buy something you don't really want, but I ussually have something around that I got as a gift or whatever that works for this purpose. You know, like almost any Jefferson's product, or almost any craft product. Or a WR master's collection bottle, etc.

They are one and the same. They call the 100 proof 'Signature' now but it used to be labeled as a BIB.

Last week, I found an OE101 7YR. I'm about 1/3 down the bottle, now. As I've posted elsewhere on SB, I, too, found distinct flavors - leaf mold, mushroom, wet leather gloves rubbed on the face by mistake while clearing deadfall, etc. - all in a good way. I can't explain why I love this stuff other than it is so different from everything else I really like.

Well, I'll make sure to get some feedback from the tasters on this one...wet leather glove...sounds like you might be back for more to fill in the blanks on this earthy excursion! Paddy
I'd incorporate it into the game. Maybe 2 wheaters for the 1st quarter, followed by a 2 BIB's for the 2nd. Follow that with rye's in the 3rd and wrap it up with barrel proofers in the 4th. Maybe I'm just a glutton in that way, but that gets you 8 (and the game will be at least 4 hours long). PaulO
Paddy made me think; you could add Rittenhouse Rye BIB to that line up.

raymoall
Ha, ha! Like the game idea! I think I'd be on the sidelines by the time the barrel proofs were up! (Well, suppose i could dial back my usual pour). And I have not had much at all in the way of rye...so like that idea, too! Thanks.
tanstaafl2
Throw in halftime and you could squeeze in a couple more pours...
